Critics Consensus: A Bad Day for A Good Day to Die Hard

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got the return of John McClane (A Good Day to Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney); a tentative love affair (Safe Haven, starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel); teenage witchcraft (Beautiful Creatures, starring Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert); and alien astronauts (Escape From Planet Earth 3D, with voice work by Brendan Fraser and Rob Corddry). Are we not trying anymore? We wanted detonators, McClane, not bombs.

I've been waiting a while to see Kiarostami's "Like Someone in Love", his follow up to "Certified Copy". I've also read a lot of good things about "No" from Sundance. I have no idea when (or if) these will be at a local theater, so I'll proably have to wait for video.

at any rate, FEBRUARY seems like a Graveyard Month for releasing movies - all the bad movies come out in February; just like Saturday is Graveyard Night for TV-series.

THe review I read indicated that the hate comes from the movies lack of realism, an element that made the first one as popular and classic as it is.

But the way I see it, movies only get more ridiculous during sequels, especially after the third one. Die Hard 5 is SUPPOSED to be silly, over the top, and crazy, that's what made Die Hard 4 so awesome, with its helicopter-car-jumping and such... what do people expect here?

It's also poorly edited, poorly directed, has wooden acting, stilted dialogue...are CGI explosions really all you need to satisfy you? Has the collective IQ of this country plummeted to the gutter? If Die Hard is #1 this weekend then...the answer is yes.

I don't know what anybody else expects, but I wish Hollywood would quit making sequels and start coming up with something new.

Yeah... because Hollywood was built on creating new things, and now doing film versions of stage plays or novels, right?

I'm expecting it to be a piece of crap, redundant action movie, and that's what it looks like....

Yeah...the element that made the franchise a success is lacking, therefore people hate it.

That's why there isn't a Rocky movie about him opening a taco cart in Philly. And an hour and a half long? That's just a slap in the face.

Such a wide range of movies this week... But regardless of rating, I think that Die Hard is going to get 1st place this weekend.

I was so excited for Die Hard 5, because the Die Hard series was the only one that stayed of quality throughout it's sequels (yeah, even the fourth one). But really? 12%? We went from 81 to 12 in one movie? But I guess that's what happens when you give the director of Max Payne and the writer of Hitman the reigns to the most consistantly good action franchise ever.

Not to mention those hacks committed a massive fanboy massacre called "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" back in 2009, and the franchise had to restart from scratch in 2011.

I might regret this, but I'm going to go high w/ Escape from Planet Earth and say it'll land somewhere in the high 30s, low 40s.

How the mighty have fallen, boys and girls *replays clips of the original film*

This reaffirms my fears that 2013 is going to be a repeat of 2010 (the year of disappointment), and I have more reason to worry about "Man of Steel" right now. Not just as a fan of the character, but also as a fan of Christopher Nolan, and a fan of movies in general.
