Stephe Whitty of the Newark Star Ledger writes this comment:
"As Americans ? and, particularly, as American moviegoers ? this kind of situation is frustrating, at best. We're impatient for action, any kind of action ? but preferably the sort that involves a team of Navy SEALs, maybe led by Dwayne Johnson."
This may come as a surprise to Mr. Whitty but there ARE intelligent Americans who are able to follow a dramatic dialogue without the need for CGI, pyrotechnics and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
This movie has neither heroes or villains. It is gripping suspense and it takes place in a real world setting of adults trying to get something solved.
We "Americans" are damn tired of war. THIS American lost her military husband to a useless interminable war. If you actually agree with the Neo-con chicken hawks in our nation (such as Bolton and McCain) then go sign up and ask to be sent to Afghanistan. You can get all the action you want! You will get to carry a 70 pound backpack and hump through mountainous terrain with assault weapons and unlimited rounds of ammunition to take out "ragheads." (Not my term) Yeah you get to kill women, babies, 12 year olds with guns and the occasional Taliban fighter who got in the way of the "collateral damage."
United 93 was a film about the hijacked plane on 9/11 where hostages ended up taking back a plane hijacked by al-qaeda terrorists. This was a tense drama. Not a lot of action...but the film showed the human side of terrorists. These are people who prayed, who loved their families, who were afraid of dying. It's easier to hate someone you need to kill by envisioning that all whacked out Middle Easterners who pray to a different "god" are worthy of killing. In Somalia, the people are so poor that hijacking a ship at sea is the only income they are left with. Is this right? Of course not! But at least this movie let us see for ourselves that these "pirates" are human beings.
Enough of this violence!! You want bodies? Go see Tom Cruise in a badly adapted Jack Reacher novel.
