What's fascinating is how the various issues -- religious or practical -- are played out in these two quite different families, yet always come down to irreconcilable differences between rebellious women and their stiff-necked, controlling men.
Of all the critics' comments, this one is the most simple- minded: an attempt to boil a fascinating, complex film down to Hoberman's narrow, pre-conceived notions of another culture.

I would have to agree with Lubna A here. It is quite a narrow and sad review from Hoberman. His review has orientalism written all over it.
An exceptional film. I was truly impressed with the younger actors, Termeh especially.
