Critic Reviews for A Year Without Love (Un Ano sin amor)
There are some unforgettable images in the film, even though the story doesn't go much of anywhere.
The openness of Minujín's understated, expressive portrayal lies at the core of an equally impressive film -- beautifully but unpretentiously shot and scored with spot-on supporting performances.
Distaff helmer Anahi Berneri alternates between long lenses and jarring, fragmentary close-up shots, creating an assured and forceful visual cocktail that serves grim quest well.
A Year Without Love isn't a sex movie (so don't expect one), but a studied examination of how one man folds jarring events into the everyday fabric of his life.
[The film] may whip a rather specialized audience into a frenzy. But for others, A Year Without Love will be a less pleasurably painful experience.
Audience Reviews for A Year Without Love (Un Ano sin amor)
A gay man who struggles to find love and live with AIDS during the '60's. Somewhat disturbing being reminded of not only the prevalence of the disease but also of the casual treatment by the main character; i.e., even though at first he refuses medical treatment, then finds it disgusting and finally eroticizes it, he still engages in casual sex. Some parts of the film are not clear but I suppose they were not really needed for the main theme of the main character eroticizing both his mental and physical pain.
