“Abandon” will leave you wanting to abandon the theater.
Dan and Nancy: Now Playing
The Broomfield Enterprise, Broomfield, CO
“Abandon” is the story about a college student whose life seems to on the fast track to success. She appears to have everything going for her until a detective shows up looking for her missing boyfriend. She is then haunted by images of her old boyfriend and her life starts to unravel. Starring Katie Holmes (“Wonder Boys”), Benjamin Bratt (“The Next Best Thing”), and Charlie Hunnam. Rated PG-13 for drug and alcohol content and a little violence and language. Time fighting off the sandman: 99 minutes.
Nancy’s Take: This is a movie that may make one yawn a few times. “Abandon” will leave you wanting to abandon the theater.
Even though Katie Holmes, who is better known from “Dawson’s Creek,” did an okay job she was a bit boring - even if she is, as Dan put it, “hot.” The cop, played by Benjamin Bratt, was pretty good looking but for some reason the veins in his forehead kept popping out of his head. The missing boyfriend, played by Charlie Hunnam, was good when he was even shown but he should have had more scenes because his character seemed to be a lot more interesting than the other characters. I don’t blame him for being missing though since it was such a boring and weird environment.
Was this movie worth the price of admission? No, the commercials looked better than it really was. I thought a couple of scenes were a bit suspenseful but Dan rolled his eyes when I jumped so I knew I was the probably the only sucker who thought it was scary. For some odd reason Lifetime original movies have better story lines and keep the movie moving along. Would I see it again? No.
Dan’s take: When choosing a book to read you’re not supposed to judge it by its cover. Well, the same should go for a movie and its preview. The preview for “Abandon” looked pretty good. It was exciting and suspenseful and they showed a lot of Katie Holmes. In reality however, this flick was painfully boring. Between the slow movie and my cold medicine it was all I could do to stay awake.
They tried to make this flick interesting by incorporating a series of wild flashbacks and a cop with bad past but it just wasn’t enough. Nothing ever really happened until the end and that was only kind of good. The problem is that it took forever to get there.
Is “Abandon” worth the price of admission? No way. I should have used the money for better cold medicine. I’d say that only huge fans of Katie Holmes should even think about going to this. She is the only thing makes it even come close to being worthwhile and that’s only because she’s hot. She really didn’t do an amazing job with her part. Anybody could’ve played the role just as good. Would I see it again? Nope.
