One of the most endearing and charming films you'll see this year.
“About a Boy” is a delightfully warm film reminiscent of the films Cary Grant made in the 1940’s and 50’s. Hugh Grant (no relation to Cary) plays the layback Will Freeman with a jovial nonchalance. Grant’s easy style and suave delivery is in perfect balance with his character.
Nicholas Hoult is young Marcus, who is befriended by Grant’s character. This young actor holds his own opposite Hugh Grant and comes through in a winning and endearing performance.
Sharing the screen with Grant are Toni Collette and Rachel Weisz. Collette, who was last seen opposite Ben Affleck in “Changing Lanes,” is a chameleon who can play any role. Collette blends herself into the part of young Marcus’ depressed mother perfectly.
Rachel Weisz, who was last seen battling Mummies in “the Mummy Returns,” rounds out the cast as Hugh Grant’s love interest.
About a Boy is one of the most endearing and charming films you'll see this year. It gets 4 stars out of 4 and is rated PG-13 for strong language and adult themes.
