We all expected ridiculous, tasteless, and grotesque, but ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER, was a pretty entertaining book. A book which the film makers completely and totally ignored.
Intentionally so. The author was the screenwriter. Look at the movie as an escalating series of cliches and I think you'll get a better understanding of it.
i said the same thing...VAMPIRE HUNTER! you should go knowing that itll be a bit campy and entertaining. its a vampire flick for Gods sake. was loads of fun to watch.
Insert any film in that place and Boom instantly positive because of it's premise. Im sorry just cause a film has a creative premise doesn't mean it's necessarily going to pan out well.
Yup it's supposed to be crazy that's what was so awesome about it. Standing in the theater I felt I was going out on a limb to see it but had another buddy who wanted to see something random and ridiculous. Everyone out of the dozen or so, even those who don't usually understand corny/cheesy humor loved it. Nothing more epic than older Abraham with his beard and top hat defending a speeding train from vampires. Also things like having a horse thrown at you, carriages that go into power slides, and the like are so crazy you end up laughing like a maniac in the theater
Agreed. I saw it with a couple friends last night and had an absolute blast. I wasn't expecting an artsy film, I was expecting blood and gore and an imaginative re-telling of Abraham Lincoln's life, and that's exactly what I got.
I can't go to the movies because I have major agoraphobia and severe panic attacks but I can't wait to watch our 12th president kill some vampires on DV freakin' D. YEAH!!
I agree that the movie is "funny" but not in a good way. It's laughable. It's the unsatisfying production quality that I object to. It's not a bad film because the premise is silly... it's a bad film because its not put together well. Fight scenes are obscured by movie tricks we've seen too much of through the years... CGI is just poor. The only thing this movie has going for it is a rather good cast.
Yeah but being ridiculous, tasteless and grotesque isn't what made the movie bad. Hardly anyone criticising it is criticising it for its premise and inherent silliness. They're criticising it for not being entertaining.
Why is it whenever a popcorn film gets panned, the defense is "You shouldn't have expected Citizen Kane"? It is possible for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter to fail on its own terms. It was a fun title and premise with the most dull execution of any movie I've seen this summer. That's just my opinion, but defenders should at least understand that opinion.
*Sigh* In the end. I still don't know what is so bad about this movie. I saw it today the second time with a brain, and I still find this to be one of my top 10 best movies of 2012 so far. I could not believe myself liking this movie so much, especially since it has a lower rated than SWATH which I thought was average. I do understand that this premise is stupid, but the movie itself was actually smart (Hell, smarter than Prometheus I'll say). The performance was great and it looked like the actors were having fun, plus the characters were pretty cool, the story is well focus and doesn't seem to drag (those the pacing is pretty poor), the action is one of the year's best, the effect were accurate enough and the dark/serious tone made the movie even more fun for me. But really, it's not nearly as serious as critics made it out to be. I barely read the book, but even I knew from the trailers and posters that it was going to be dark and serious and I was looking forward to it. Overall, I don't see whats so bad about this movie at all.
Is it flawed? Yes! definitely, but I somehow ended liking this movie more than Brave.
Okay everyone keeps saying Vampire hunter is a silly idea. But it is no different than what bram stoker did to Vlad Dracula AKA the impaler. Vlad Led his country through a terrible war and became a national hero to his country. Abe led his country through a terrible war and became a hero. One is the Impaler the Other is Honest Abe. Bram stoker turned Vlad into the first Vampire. Turning Lincoln into a Vampire hunter is the same idea.
The reviewers must have seen another movie or been too drunk to know what they were looking at. I loved Vampire Hunter. It is well paced. It is entertaining, and never for a moment boring, from beginning to end. Each of the characters fulfills an important role. Most importantly, it is true to the high character of Abraham Lincoln. It builds on his historical courage, his love of family, love for his country, and even his recklessness. Never mind the elitist, snobbish criticism of these idiots. Even the historical liberties are of a "so-what?" nature. This is not history, after all. This is well done, creative, entertainment. See Vampire Hunter. You'll be glad you did.
I absolutely had to see it a second time, I just could not get enough of Abraham being awesome. The first time was laughable because it was everything I WASN'T expecting. The second time, though, I was able to take in just how AWESOME they made Lincoln look, especially with the fast-pace fights with the randomly inserted slowed down flips and spins.
*Shrugs* I have never understood what the use of a "movie critic" is anyways. Movies are made to entertain us. They are made to be an escape. WHO or WHAT makes these yokels any more qualified to "rate a movie" than anyone else in the world? What gives some snarky, self-absorbed group of people who think they are far more intelligent than they actually are tell us the masses what we should and should not watch just because something didn't trip their trigger in particular? I say screw it, as soon as some over-wordy artsy-fartsy critic trashes something I INSTANTLY want to go see it, just so I can re-read the review and go " you sir/or young lady, are and educated idiot"
Of course it's ridiculous and tasteless and grotesque. It's VLAD DRACULA VAMPIRE. Good Grief people it is the same premise Bram Stoker used to create the genre! Great leader that saved his country becomes Vampire. How is that not silly and "becomes Vampire hunter" is?
