Ace Ventura 3: Carrey Not Included
by Scott Weinberg | August 15, 2006
Discuss Article
Remember what happened when someone tried to do a "Dumb & Dumber" sequel without Jim Carrey? How about when they slapped together a Carrey-deficient sequel to "The Mask"? You think those would be a pair of solid lessons learned right there, eh? Guess again. Here comes a Carrey-free "Ace Ventura 3."

From The Hollywood Reporter: "Morgan Creek has begun the detective work on a kooky cold case. The production company has hired Jeff Sank and brothers Jason and Justin Heimberg to write a third installment of the hit franchise "Ace Ventura." The two previous "Ventura" comedies -- 1994's "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and the following year's "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" -- grossed more than $180 million domestically and helped establish Jim Carrey as one of the highest-paid comedy actors in Hollywood. The latest pet project is expected to center on the eccentric detective's son, who steps into his father's shoes to take over the family business."

Ooh boy, the "eccentric son sequel" routine. Let's hope this one's as good as "Son of the Pink Panther."

When will studios learn NOT to do stuff like this? I guess they just aren't happy enough seeing all those box office bombs, that they have to make another one.

The Russian Box Office Bomb Roulette
It's an old game that Hollywood producers play, where they put their "good name and reputation" on the line on movies that they know will tank. If the next project they get is still big enough, they've survived the "Russian Box Office Bomb Roulette". If not, you'll see them next asking you "If you want fries with that cheeseburger".

why doesn't Jim just come back?
He needs something like this to let some stress out before taking on something more serious again.

Let's hope they don't pour $100M into the production like New Line did with The Mask 2.

I was just talking the other day that they Jim needs to do one more of these and he'll be set in the comedy department. He needs to do Ace Ventura one more time...for me.

yeah really, didn't they learn from Son of the Mask and Dumb and Dumberer? no Carrey, no audience.

well actually, the only Carrey-less sequel that would have even a slight chance of being good is the rumored Bruce Almighty sequel with Steve Carell reprising his role from the first film, and at least Carell's a funny guy and his notoriety has skyrocketed because of The Office and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

This is fucking stupid
Jim Carrey IS Ace Ventura, and the movie wouldn't have worked without him. I don't want to see some D-list pimplefaced teenager doing a Ace Ventura impression.

Fuck this. Hollywood, you're on notice.

This is going to suck horribly. You think they would have learned from the horrible mess they made of the other Jim Carrey less sequels. Evan Almighty might be alright though.

Looking at what I said earleri...
I said in a post earlier (somewhere around here) that:

"I will see this movie if Jim Carrey is in it. But if he is not I will avoid it like the plague."

Well, now it looks like the latter. I will avoid this like the plague. I won't even consider it. Horrible, horrible idea. Hollywood needs to stop doing this! They are ruining perfectly good franchises.

Jim "the bomb" Carrey?
Well, it might be a bit better if JC is in it, butI doubt it. JC's career is practically over as every film after "the mask" pretty much bombed with him in it......

He might actually consider doing a serious film, that might be better for his career at this moment.

Um, I'm not a Carry fan, but you saying everything he has done since the Mask has bombed makes you look like a huge dumb ass. Just last year "Fun With Dick and Jane" did 100+ million,as did "Lemony Snicket" the year before. And the year before that, "Bruce Almighty" did 200 something, as did the Grinch, and Liar Liar was 100+ million. Then there are movies like "Man on the Moon" and "Eternal Sunshine.." and "The Truman Show" that, while not huge hit, won him a ton of acclaim. His only true flop was "The Majestic." I wish he had more flops, but the truth is he his a huge draw. Don't know what rock you've been under.

Spoken like someone that hasn't watched a Jim Carrey movie (or an award show) since the Mask. The guy is a walking talking hit-maker. The guy has nearly 2 billion dollars in box office revenue for his career and you think he's a bomb.

Or maybe you're just a troll trying to get a rise out of everyone.

Bring back Jim !!
Put him back in the role where he can display his comedic talent that brought him to the dance , Ace Ventura !!

I can see empty movie theatres for the release of Ace Ventura 3 without Jim Carrey as the star .

Jim Carrey , if not Ace Ventura 3 , at least do SOMETHING funny again .

As far as I'm concerned, if they want an above-par hit, they need a good director to work on this, not some two-bit hack. That's why the last two non-Jim Carrey sequels bombed. Or maybe Hollywood is becoming egotistical like Tom Cruise's goofy ass.

'I better jump off this cliff and see what happens'

--this has been my own frustrated, creative writing exercise to demonstrate how FUCKING, MIND_NUMBINGLY STUPID a studio would have to be to make the SAME FUCKING MISTAKE over and over again, like making a sequel without the star. Screw'em. They deserve to lose their money.
