Critic Reviews for Acts of Godfrey
A strained exercise in dramaturgical gimmickry that would be trying even as fringe theater.
The results are slight but old-fashioned fun, Think less TS Eliot, more 'Carry On'.
The dialogue is in rhyming couplets, an initially amusing device that rapidly becomes tiresome as the listener comes to anticipate the end of the next line, "vicars" inevitably being followed three seconds later by "knickers".
Whoever first believed this film was a good idea must, I'm afraid, be severely spoken to - preferably not in verse.
Things only properly kick off in a frantic farce-like finale; by then the laboriousness of the plotting has taken its toll.
Souls are bared and old scores are settled, among a gallery of characters who could probably be bettered.
Not much is happening of any real interest. At least the sparky collection of characters helps overcome the film's corny tone.
