Movie Info

Adam (Beau Bridges) is the American sailor convicted in a Liverpool court for a crime he did not commit. Shipped off to Australia, he endures the cruelties of his captors who delight in starving, beating and hanging the prisoners. He escapes when Dyson (James Booth) murders a soldier. Dyson escapes but Adam is captured and sentenced to hang for the murder. He gets an audience with the Governor of New South Wales and is allowed to plead his case. Sir Phillip MacDonald (John Mills) is the progressive minded ruler who pushes for prison reform and humane treatment of the convicts. Adam joins a group of free prisoners whose death sentences have been commuted to 20 years, and each man is given a 5 acre parcel in the outback. The free men band together to build a village and establish their own community. Bess (Jane Merrow) is the prisoner who agrees to marry Adam after he promises her nothing will come of their union. The couple settles down, acquires some sheep and love blooms between them. When Dyson and his band of cutthroats burn down the village, Adam organizes a militia to combat the guerillas. Due to his efforts, the Governor pardons Adam as he and Bess try to rebuild their village.more
