Evie Brighton (SIX FEET UNDER's Lauren Ambrose) is a bright yet troubled teenager who secretly writes poetry and cares for her retarded sister Emily (Taylor Roberts), whose mental disability was caused by a childhood injury that still haunts their guilt-stricken mother Martha (Amy Madigan). When Emily begins reciting some of her older sister's poetry, Evie concocts a ruse that convinces Martha and her high school English teacher Stewart Worthy (Christopher Lloyd) that Emily is the true author--all while purposely sabotaging her own college interviews to further delay the onset of adulthood.
