Parental Guidance: After Earth and Now You See Me

We give you what you need to know about the family-friendliness of this week's new releases.

This week's two wide releases have a lot in common: they're both rated PG-13, and they're both hitting theaters with few advanced reviews. But are After Earth and Now You See Me safe for the family? Read on to find out.

In Theaters This Week:

After Earth

11%

What's it about? Cypher (Will Smith) and Kitai (Jaden Smith) crash land on an abandoned Earth, and must navigate a perilous post-apocalyptic wasteland to signal for help.

Who's it for? It's rated PG for "sci-fi action violence and some disturbing images." Your teens will be fine, but middle schoolers may find the whole thing a little too intense.

Is it any good? Unfortunately, the reviews for After Earth are being held until the day of its release.

Now You See Me

50%

What's it about? The FBI is on the trail of a team of crack team of bank robbers, who perform magic shows as a diversion to raid the coffers of corrupt businessmen.

Who's it for? It's rated PG-13 for "language, some action and sexual content." It's probably safe for older teens.

Is it any good? Once again, we'd love to tell you what the critics thought, but the reviews for Now You See Me are being held prior to the film's release.

Keeping reviews away until release are always a good sign that the movie will win every Oscar.

I really hope AFTER EARTH gets awesome reviews! The only obstacles this movie has is Jaden Smith and M. Night Shyamalan. If this does become good with reviews, then it'll be Shyamalan's big comeback. If not, he'll fuck up Will Smith's blockbuster career!

M Night has sunk to a level that's going to require more than one movie to justify a comeback I think. The fact that reviews are being withheld is not an encouraging occurrence. The only positive thing I can say about Shaymalan's career trajectory is it's going to be hard to make a movie sub-Airbender.

Well, it's nice to see M Night trying other genres since he wasn't doing so well on the "pre-Twilight Zone" copycats extensions out of Serlings's popular show! If he liked Serling's Twilight Zone so much, he could've took the time to read many stories that haven't turned into film yet since they're still many stories with irony that haven't been screened yet instead of remaking stuff people had already saw before! Ironically though, "True Grit" was the Coen Brothers most successful film up to date even though they're hundreds and thousands of Western books that haven't been adapted into movies yet such as Clay More, Louis L'Amour, Zane grey and Max Brand to name a few!

I actually like his Twilight zone early work much better than The Last Airbender. Upon further review though I guess The Happening probably was worse. I think my brain was trying to protect me from it by building a memory wall around it which I just had to scratch.

That's never a good sign when reviews are held back - The special effects look good for After Earth, but I am not expecting too much more after that

I like how they write that both movies are rated PG-13 at the top, but then say that After Earth is PG.

Not trying to be a jerk, but how can this be a parental review if no one has actually seen the movies?

Because movie's have become so unoriginal you can pretty much tell what you're going to get from an MPAA rating. Sad, but true.

After Earth: Not suitable for children, may contain plot twists and story elements so horrible will turn your child off of SCI FI forever.
Now you See Me: Not suitable for children. Large amounts of Jessie Essienberg Back Sass kids will surely
imitate. Also displays of rebellion against authority figures and capitalist ideals.

Why does M Night demand his notably charismatic stars (Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, now Will Smith) drain all personality and charisma from their performances. This has been something I've noticed even in the beginning with his good films. Why have actors if you're going to make them read their lines like Eeyor on valium?
