Jean Dominique, the Haitian radio personality, investigative journalist, and political activist who was assassinated in April 2000, is the subject of Jonathan Demme's informative documentary. Demme, who has directed other documentaries about charismatic figures such as Spalding Gray (SWIMMING TO CAMBODIA), asked Dominique to participate in this film in 1991. At that time, Dominique was exiled from Haiti and living in New York City, where he remained dedicated to combatting the oppressive Haitian government. Interviews with Dominique and his wife Michele Montas shed light on the strong personalities and utter conviction of these two charming renegades, while Demme interweaves footage that puts their lives in context. Shots of their independent radio station, Radio Haiti, show the husband-wife team broadcasting inside the station, as well as the building's bullet-riddled exterior. A tour of Dominique's childhood home, where his mother shares her reflections, instantly communicate his deep attachment to Haiti. Meanwhile, harder pictures of riots and violence show the country's deep-seated poverty, injustice, and political unrest. All of this culminates in a simple explanation of why Dominique was so dedicated to trying to make a change. With a nice balance of character development--highlighting Dominique's remarkable spirit--and political background about Haiti and Dominique's impact on its people, THE AGRONOMIST is a superb film. The excellent, dub-heavy soundtrack by Wyclef Jean brings a contemporary edge to the film's events. [More]

Reviews for The Agronomist
A political documentary that sings with the urgency, potency and, yes, stridency of a great protest song.
It tells instead of shows for the most part, and the telling isn't as effective as it should be.
John Demme is the right filmmaker for assembling the truth about the subject-matter of Haitian freedom.
Real and unpolished, Jonathan Demme's decade-in-the-making documentary on Haitian broadcaster Jean Dominique is engrossing and powerful.
With Haiti again in the news, The Agronomist is an apt history lesson about its political turmoil and a powerful testimonial about patriotism in the face of oppression.
A thoroughly fascinating look at a man with a mind that is subtle, sensitive and alert to life's nuances.
A fascinating film about a country's 200- year fight for democracy and the contributions made by one extraordinary man.
Not an extraordinary portrait, but it does portray an extraordinary man.
... a rousing celebration of a genuine people's hero and a timely reminder that a free press is the greatest weapon in the arsenal of democracy and freedom.
Freedom to hope that one person, convicted and articulate, can still make a difference.
Rousing, heartbreaking... and occasionally discombobulated. Still, the movie is aglow with its subject's clear-eyed optimism.
We are left with vivid images of Dominique, whose desire to change his country, despite formidable intimidation, is an inspiration to any supporter of democracy.
A thoroughly absorbing and deeply affecting portrait of an extraordinary leader.
A profile, often moving, of the quixotic figure at Haiti's hopeful center, Dominique.
We watch Dominique use humor and cynicism as well as anger, and we understand he is not a zealot but simply a reasonable man saying reasonable things in an unreasonable country.
Teeming with the profound chaos and more profound harmony of modern Haiti.
