It's a truly amazing movie, an epic made from genius, stubbornness, and madness.

Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane. Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, such as the time Herzog reportedly held a gun to Kinski's head to get him to finish a scene. Whatever transpired between Herzog and Kinski, it made for astonishing cinema, as evidenced by the actor's haunting performance and the entire film's powerfully hypnotic mood. [More]

Reviews for Aguirre, the Wrath of God
It drags its feet until its feet are bleeding stumps. Save yourself.
It's a testament to the genius of Aguirre: The Wrath of God that its genesis has spawned its own creation mythology.
Quiet and atmospheric, creepy and grisly, drenched in both equatorial sunshine and scarlet blood -- the film is startlingly powerful as it subtly examines themes of imperialism, corporate greed and ultimately personal madness.
[A]n anti-epic about European conquest that, while based in part on ... an ill-fated historical expedition, is as macabre as a Poe story.
Potheads who watch this will probably check their stash the next morning to see if any of it's gone.
The powerful and near demonic screen presence of Klaus Kinski, combined with the very real danger of the nature that surrounds him and Herzog's gift for making every shot count, is quite remarkable.
Aguirre, Wrath of God is not just a great movie but an essential one.
A seminal film without which we almost cerainly would not have with us either Apocalypse Now or much of the ouevre of Terence Malick.
Features one of the strangest and most impressive performances in film history.
A saga of adventurers driven headlong into annihilation by their own hubris and desire for immortality.
Takes us into a visually stunning and surreal Heart of Darkness adventure.
Depicted conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro is driven, pompous, and partially ignorant – traits mirrored in director Werner Herzog for leading his crew into identical endurances. His resulting work is a vision of rare audacity.
A stunning, terrifying exploration of human obsession descending into madness.
