While this new Alfie is far from PC, giving him even an ounce of sympathy misses the point.

This version is set in New York City and is pumped up with giddy, cleverly experimental editing. The story has Alfie (Law), a Don Juan-esque limo driver, speaking directly to the camera as he seduces the lovely ladies of the city. Eventually he's forced to take stock of the damage he's caused, and acknowledge the emptiness at the core of his chosen lifestyle. Playing the role of Alfie requires a fine balancing act from Law--he must be so charming that he seduces both the audience and himself, while also conveying the self-delusion and sadness at the character's core--and Law is up for the challenge, expertly conveying glimpses of the unfathomed depth beneath his polished shallowness. Equally good are his array of conquests, including Marisa Tomei as a single mom, Sienna Miller as a mood-swinging party girl, and Susan Sarandon as a rich older woman. A soundtrack by Mick Jagger and David Stewart (Eurythmics) adds liberal dollops of self-aware rock & roll melancholy. Dick Latessa is great as an old man who offers Alfie some sage advice, and Omar Epps plays the screwed-over limo driving buddy. [More]

Reviews for Alfie
The script comes across as a misogynistic mess and the performance, although consistently good, can't overcome the diluted material.
Alfie is a total knockout of a movie: stylish, well-crafted and well-performed. It also manages simultaneously to be a cautionary tale for Casanovas everywhere.
a big-screen version of 'Sex and the City' with Jude Law as the sort of character Carrie Bradshaw might have become if she'd spiked her martinis with plenty of testosterone.
Law is a talented actor trapped in a male model body. He makes us care about this cad we shouldn't give a flip about through his ability to charm and disarm.
Jude Law is perfect for the role in every way, matching Caine's charms note for note, and only besting the maestro with his disarming good looks.
Jude Law stars in a cute, disposable remake based on a cruel, unforgettable '60s classic.
Alfie plays more like a Republican cautionary tale from the 80s warning against illegitimate parenting, abortion and diseases that infect your penis.
Law is unconvincing as a roué, the script is juvenile and the directing is bereft of inspiration. I was expecting something dreadful but it wasn’t that good.
It's a true joy to watch Susan Sarandon, who reprises Shelley Winters' role, deliver Alfie his due, and newcomer Sienna Miller does an excellent turn as a downward-spiraling party girl.
It feels more like a studio-bred plan to exploit a familiar library title than an attempt by filmmakers to find a fresh approach at retelling a favorite story.
This ode to the joy of chain smoking would make a great cigarette infomercial if tobacco companies were still allowed to show such things.
He seems to be one part Alfie from the 1960s and the other part, well, multiplex star drone. There's nothing authentic about this London lad.
That the movie succeeds about half of the time is tribute to its mature recognition of sexual cause and effect.
Though he's highly irresponsible, this Alfie is not quite a calculating heel, which makes the material go down easier while blunting the point.
Alfie is such smooth, crisp entertainment, you barely even notice it has nothing new to say.
The story floats along in a philosophical swamp of empowerment mythology, theraspeak and materialism-as-personality that's as contemporary as Oprah's self-esteem empire.
The newly remade Alfie does for Jude Law what the 1966 original accomplished for Michael Caine: It makes him a star.
From the perspective of pure entertainment, Alfie is never boring and always easy on the eyes.
