This version is set in New York City and is pumped up with giddy, cleverly experimental editing. The story has Alfie (Law), a Don Juan-esque limo driver, speaking directly to the camera as he seduces the lovely ladies of the city. Eventually he's forced to take stock of the damage he's caused, and acknowledge the emptiness at the core of his chosen lifestyle. Playing the role of Alfie requires a fine balancing act from Law--he must be so charming that he seduces both the audience and himself, while also conveying the self-delusion and sadness at the character's core--and Law is up for the challenge, expertly conveying glimpses of the unfathomed depth beneath his polished shallowness. Equally good are his array of conquests, including Marisa Tomei as a single mom, Sienna Miller as a mood-swinging party girl, and Susan Sarandon as a rich older woman. A soundtrack by Mick Jagger and David Stewart (Eurythmics) adds liberal dollops of self-aware rock & roll melancholy. Dick Latessa is great as an old man who offers Alfie some sage advice, and Omar Epps plays the screwed-over limo driving buddy. [More]

Law makes self-satisfaction beguiling, and in an odd way that's his, and the movie's, limitation.

What damages this obsolete Alfie more is the film’s limited message, which primarily speaks to a dwindling community of urban lotharios and insomniacs perusing singles bars

The women Alfie dallies with are not doormats — which is another very welcome departure from the 1966 film.

I couldn't get enough of this movie. Alfie is one of the best movies I have seen all year, and Jude Law should get another Oscar nomination

Charm isn't a substitute for emotional nuance, but the trick pulled off here to justify the remake is Law's seductively engaging performance.

...Law has the right balance of bravado, smooth tact and social etiquette to believably court chicks way out of his league.

Transported from London to Manhattan, and updated by some 40 years, Alfie still retains enough charm and bite to win discerning audiences over again.

A remake that deserves to be put in a burlap sack and drowned like a litter of kittens.

A gratifying early surprise of the autumn movie season, an intelligent and wise film that finds vast entertainment value in one man's own existential crises.

A breezy, sexy romp with a conscience that reflects in obvious but interesting ways on societal changes over the intervening 38 years.

Alas, this is a remake without a reason. Alfie can no longer shock us.

Jude Law plays the limousine taxi driver like a sex-mad Alan Whicker, whisking us around the hot spots of Manhattan with a sardonic eye on the best places to pick up chicks

While this remake does have a certain charm, it's also fundamentally, fatally flawed.

Like its hero, the film looks good but can't commit, talks the talk but has nothing to say.
