Movie Info

You've seen the Disney classic, now experience the tale of Alice in Wonderland as never before in this live-action adaptation of the timeless tale from the BBC and director Jonathan Miller. Capturing all of the menace and wonder of Lewis Carroll's age-old classic while injecting the story with a pinch of subversive Victorian gothic satire, this surreal updating of the children's fantasy classic features an all-star cast including Sir Michael Redgrave, Sir John Gielgud, Leo McKern, Peter Cook,

Wonderland becomes the adult world of the late 19th century rather than a fanciful sphere of gabby animals.

A surreal experience that is both a beautiful and somewhat frustrating.

This is Alice on Mogadon, a melancholy and, in places, excruciatingly slow take on the tale with virtually all the comedic moments pared away.

Jonathan Miller's dark, incense-scented BBC television interpretation is ... planted in the psychedelic loam of the mid-1960s, complete with lysergic imagery, an untrusting view of the 'over 30' realm, and a musical score by sitar master Ravi Shankar.

[Home Vision Entertainment's DVD] ... gorgeous, clean print ... Several welcome supplements ... The first is the audio commentary by director Miller ... The second extra is a genuine rarity, the first-ever Alice adaptation committed to film.

Audience Reviews for Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland (1966) BBC Television Adaptation

Review:

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (collected in one volume) is my all time favorite book. This movie is the worst adaptation of the Lewis Carroll story I've seen, plus one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Alice's acting seems to be from either a walking coma or some over drugged state where she occasionally breaks her stare to look at something or someone behind the camera. Thank God it's a short film but it could have been even shorter if they cut out the ten minute cintar music fest. Despite the description this is not a horror movie nor is it dark, it's just bad.
