These things no longer surprise or tantalize us as they once did. In a very short time, science-fiction films have developed their own jargon that's now become a part of the grammar.
kill yourself. please

I don't understand how this is even on RT. He died in 2000 and this is posted in 2005...so he couldn't have actually posted it himself. But regardless, he is one of those guys who likes to go against the grain. He didn't like Rocky, The Exorcist and many other movies that have been considered classics others have already mentioned. I've met people like this...they're annoying. Yes they're entitled to their own opinion but they shouldn't be taken serious nor counted in any public rating because all they do is ruin otherwise good/perfect ratings.

So what? We are not talking about what it makes us feel like now, we are talking about it then! When it was released matters the most. And remember 1979 DUH!

Who are you? I don't think your opinion makes any sense or matters at all. Scariest sci-fi film ever made.

Another bad review on a great film by this guy, how can you be a top critic when i've seen you give rottens to atleast 5 movies that are 90% and up....

Even though Vincent Canby is dead, his incredibly lame reviews usually criticize movies for their modern-ness. Improfessional critics like him should've never had jobs.

lol at people wishing death on the already dead critic. He died over 10 years ago, and this review was put up about 6 years ago. So therefore either someone from the New York Times put up his review to honor his memory or to troll RT...I semi-hope it's the latter.
Feb 15 - 10:38 PM
Damn Vincent, do you like any good movies?
Sep 9 - 07:11 AM
Vincent Canby didn't like it because he had a heart attack half way though it. Don't judge a movie if you only see half of it. He probably forgot what was happening in the first place.

haha, funny old people. Go review Linsay Lohan or something worth criticizing.
Dec 27 - 11:32 PM
That seems like sort of a compliment

What nonsense is this...

What do you mean surprise or tantalize us? Alien was he first film to portray extraterrestrials as horrific creatures to be terrified by, and it also paved the way for a lot of sci fi films.

did you fight for the south?

When a film changes and influences culture, it's considered a success, not a failure.
I'm sorry it was better than 'Earth VS The Spider'.
