Alex and Sylvia Sichel have taken a familiar coming-of-age story, something that might work as an Afterschool Special, and given it the contour, grit and white-hot energy of something much more.

The symbiotic, loving relationship between riot-grrrl teens Ellen and Claude degrades after Ellen begins dating a rough-hewn, mean-spirited older boy, and Claude tries on a lesbian identity with the help of a new gay male friend. The movie is suffused with alternative music-scene bit parts and cameos, including Leisha Hailey (of the Murmurs) and Mary Timony (of Helium). [More]

Reviews for All Over Me
Part of the reason All Over Me possesses such a stark sense of realism is because of the keenly-observed, unaffected performances of the lead actors.
This is not new territory, but it is a completely new exploration of it.
Given great lyrical force by Folland, it comes closer to unlocking the secret lives of girls than any other recent American movie.
Foland ... gives a marvelously expressive, poignant performance as Claude.
Sichel strips her story to the essential, offering a film that's tough, compassionate and true.
Though the main charcater is lesbian, Sichel's gritty youth melodrama is so rich in ideas amd so roght in its texture that it goes beyond a coming-out ot even a lesbian-themed story.
Reveals the adolescence most everyone went through (or witnessed) but no one talks about.
I do think the Sichels got right much of the awkwardness of teenage transitions into adulthood and of the comfort girls find in the company of other equally confused and hormonally distressed girls.
transcends its occasional operatic moments by providing plenty of soft-spoken reality
