Critic Review - Birmingham Post

The greatest singular joy of The American is the fact that it's less complicated than Clooney's 2007 thriller Michael Clayton and we're never sure if George is going to explode into life.

Michael Clayton is a million times better than this movie. The American starts very strong for the first 5 minutes. Then it slows to a crawl and nothing happens for the rest of the movie. There's hardly any dialog. No clue as to why what little is happening is actually happening. No idea who Clooney works for or why he's being targeted or why he shot the girl in the back of the head at the beginning of the movie. Other than some nice scenery, it's just a long boring trip to Italy with a boring character who barely talks and you get to sit around with him and watch nothing happen for most of the movie.

"We're never sure if George is going to explode into life." - Spoiler alert: he doesn't. I'd watch Michael Clayton any day over this boring movie.
