Tomatometer Watch: American Gangster Debuts at 100 Percent
by Alex Vo | October 22, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

After getting the worst reviews of his career for A Good Year (26 percent on its Tomatometer), Ridley Scott's newest opus, American Gangster, is so far poised to do a critical 180. Early reviews have built up a 100 percent Tomatometer for the film, which will be opening next week on Friday. Back to Article

hopefully gone baby gone will win Best Picture. American Gangster looked like it was going to win best picture ever since it was previewed. Too predictable. Although it does look ridiculously good.

You're both wrong. There Will Be Blood or Charlie Wilson's War will take the award. American Gangster looks great, though.

I caught an advanced screening. It's every bit as good as the Tomatometer implies.

I can't wait to see this one. Crowe and Washington make for a hell of a mix and the film looks great.

Who really gives a damn what wins best picture? I haven't since Shakespeare in Love.
I'm just looking forward to a great movie and after 3:20 to Yuma, another great performance by Russell Crowe.

Yeah, as much as I'd like it to happen, the Academy pry won't give Best Pic to a crime drama two years in a row. Charlie Wilson's War or Atonement, probably. There Will Be Blood gets a nod though, but too dark I would guess.

While I wish Crowe and Scott success (and I know this film will do well) its a little too early to be saying it will debut at 100% when we still have over a week in a half to go. I guess this was just a slow news day, huh?

A lot of films debut with 0. I was surprised to see there was only eight reviews... for making the headlines I figured, oh, at least forty. ONE negative review would bring it down to 89%.

A lot of films debut on Rotten Tomatoes at 100%, if that's the case then that would be even more irrelevant.

The good reviews always, always, always come first. Right off the bat we know at least one critic will dock AG with a rotten tomato because it's too long, since that never fails to happen.

And if that falls through, we've always got Victoria Alexander to comment-bait.

TheAnswer: Perhaps because American Gangster is directed by an Academy Award Winner, and starring two Academy Award Winners, and is favored to Win some Academy Awards?

Besides that, though, I looked it up: its premiere was the 19th in New York. So... that's probably it.

Scratch that, Ridley Scott has only been nominated for Best Director, albeit 3 times. I really thought he had won at least once. Perhaps this time?

No I think it's just a slow news day.

"Early reviews have built up a 100 percent Tomatometer for the film, which will be opening next week on Friday."

Again Steve Carrell's film opens THIS Friday and has 100%, sure American Gangster is a bigger and better film but my point was the purpose of this post makes no since when the film doesn't come out for another two weeks and has only a handful of reviews. This isn't the first time this has been done here either. I think this is a result of nothing new to report, though frankly I think a 100% for a film that premieres this week is more note worthy than for one that premieres next week.

How about we fight about a damn news article. Sometimes, I think some of you guys hve nothing better to do. The point is American Gangster has more hype than Dan in Real Life. This is why it is headlined. More people care about Denzel and Crowe than Steve Carrel. Also the fact that Ridley Scott is directing two of the biggest nammes in hollywood. Not to mention the story loks very intriguing. No offense to The 40 Year Old Virgin himself but I don't have much desire to see Dan in Real Life. I'm sure it might be a god film but I want to hear more. And yes RT does post news like this for every hyped up movie that starts out at 100% on the Tomatometer. They did it for Transformers, 300, and I think they also did it for Spider-Man 3 (Can't remember though). They would probably do it for Saw IV too, if the reviews started at 100% but we all know that ain't gong to happen. The point is please stop bitching about stupid stuff when we all know why the reviews to this film made headlines at RT. There are mant people looking forward to seeing this movie, me being one of them.

"More people care about Denzel and Crowe than Steve Carrel."

Care to back that up?

Not that it matters. RT could have EASILY have made the headline "Dan in real life AND American Gangster debut at 100%" thus increasing the number of people who "care" even further.

If a 100% debut is a newsworthy accomplishment, than "Dan" deserves a shout out regardless of popularity as well.

Movies are about more than popularity. Logical consistency is nice to have too.

Btw....

Can someone explain why critics are such suckers for ganster shows (American Gangser, scarface, The departed, The Sopranos, Godfather 1 and 2, etc.)?

It's a shame really that certain genres are embraced and others are almost universally snubbed by awards.

So if you want an oscar, don't make a comedy or action flick. Milk the gangster and over-the-top-mele-drama genres.

I realize that but they didn't. Why? I don't know.

"More people care about Denzel and Crowe than Steve Carrel."

"Care to back that up?"

Not at all, if anyone remembers a poll was taken from Movietickets.com of the most anticipated films by the public. Here is what it said.

"Respondents of the poll were asked to rank their interest level on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 representing little or no interest and 5 representing significant interest in seeing each major film scheduled to be released in the course of the next 12 months. Based on these results, the top 20 films are listed below:

1 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2 - The Dark Knight (Batman Begins 2)
3 - National Treasure: Book of Secrets
4 - American Gangster
5 - The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
6 - Iron Man
7 - I Am Legend
8 - Get Smart
9 - The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
10 - Charlie Wilson's War
11 - Hancock
12 - Beowulf
13 - His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass
14 - Mamma Mia!
15 - The Incredible Hulk
16 - Speed Racer
17 - Step Brothers
18 - Bee Movie
19 - Mr. Magnorium's Wonder Emporium
20 - Starship Dave

The above listed most anticipated movies demonstrated strength among both males and females. The top five films by gender are listed below:

Top Five Films Among Males:
1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2. The Dark Knight
3. Iron Man
4. National Treasure: Book of Secrets
5. American Gangster

Top Five Films Among Females:
1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2. National Treasure: Book of Secrets
3. The Dark Knight
4. American Gangster
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"

I don't see Dan In Real Life. Now, as I said before this doesn't mean the movie won't be good I just don't have any interest in it yet. I wanna hear more about it before I pay.

"If a 100% debut is a newsworthy accomplishment, than "Dan" deserves a shout out regardless of popularity as well."

I agree with your point.

What accent exactly is Crowe using in AG? Is he supposed to be a transplanted Aussie with an eclectic mix of northeastern accents, or is he going for something more parochial?

RT should do an article that matters... like "Indiana Jones IV destined to be the highest grossing film of all-time!" If any film has a chance of beating Titanic I think Indy might be the one...who doesn't like Indy!?!
