Consensus: In spite of its attempts to accurately record Frank McCourt's memoirs, the onscreen adaptation fails to capture any of the drama or humor of his life.

ANGELA'S ASHES is the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt (played at various ages by Joe Breen, Ciaran Owens, and Michael Legge), whose personal memoir became a worldwide phenomenon. When eldest son Frank's baby sister dies and father Malachy (Robert Carlyle) can find no work, the McCourt family is forced to leave America and return to their native Ireland, where conditions are even more destitute than in Brooklyn. Malachy's northern accent is frowned upon in Limerick, keeping him on welfare and the family living in poverty. Things turn even more sour when two more children die and Malachy leaves the family to go to work (or, better yet, drink) in England. He never returns. Frank struggles through the poverty and his new role as man of the house, but throughout the seeming hopelessness his dream of traveling to America keeps him determined and optimistic. The three little-known actors playing Frank are impressive, and Emily Watson gives a quiet, impassioned performance as Frank's mother, Angela. Michael Seresin's photography underscores the deft direction of Alan Parker (COME SEE THE PARADISE), infusing the story with beauty even at its most desperate moments. [More]

Reviews for Angela's Ashes
There's a compelling momentum to Angela's Ashes, Alan Parker's very faithful, if poetically subordinate, version of McCourt's book, which imposed elegance on squalor and intelligence on the indolence cultivated by poverty.
As well-crafted and sensitive as it is, the movie remains one step removed from inspiration.
Alan Parker logra uno de sus mejores trabajos en lo que es un tributo al espíritu humano que ofrece lo mejor de sí en medio de las peores adversidades
A moving, passionate drama that echoes with McCourt's distinctive character and glimmers with obstinate hope.
The young actors playing Frank at various ages (Joe Breen, Ciaran Owens, Michael Legge) are all excellent.
The last and least of the season's overlong, Oscar-reaching prestige productions.
I'm sure the producers of Angela's Ashes meant well, but they got the wrong guy to direct it.
Misses the mark as an exceptional drama yet manages to vividly convey the soul-shattering effects of poverty.
Few other films have had the courage to tell a tale of childhood hopelessness so honestly.
If Parker had aimed more at capturing the author's unique voice, and worried less about getting the details right, his movie might have been extraordinary.
A dreary, ultimately punishing adaptation of Frank McCourt's memoir, where every other scene has somebody either getting sick, puking or dying.
The story lacks focused character conflict that would make it a truly fine cinematic experience.
