ANGEL'S LADIES is a documentary about the inner workings of a Beatty, Nevada brothel from the point of view of Linda, Kevin, and Melody, the women who work in the "strange dichotomy of the Christian whorehouse." The filmmaker, Doug Lindeman, feels that as a middle-aged gay man he can identify with the lives of women who are sexual renegades, especially since the women upon whom he focuses his camera in ANGEL'S LADIES are all in their fifties. The owners of the brothel, Mack and Angel Moore, opened it in 1997, two years after retiring and selling their chain of funeral homes in Eugene, Oregon. The Moores are devout Christians who looked at the brothel as a way for them to help ease human suffering. With ANGEL'S LADIES, Lindeman isn't interested in the graphic sexual details of the brothel. He's more interested in his subjects' lives, and the way that the women working in the brothel are interesting, insightful, funny, and articulate in their descriptions of the choices they've made. He also builds the film around the Moores' running of the business: setting working hours, enforcing rules, controlling petty jealousies, and managing money. All in all, the film is a balanced, non-condescending story of daily life in a different kind of brothel. [More]
