Consensus: In the immortal words of the Village People; 'In the Navy/ You can sail the seven seas/ In the Navy/ You can put your mind at ease.' However, if you're a movie critic, your mind was not put at ease by Annapolis; instead, you were probably felt uneasy because of the remarkable similarities between the plot of this mediocre, cliche-ridden drama and Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman.

Rated: PG-13 [See Full Rating] for some violence, sexual content and language.

When he won a coveted admission spot tothe Naval Academy at Annapolis, local kid Jake Huard (James Franco, "James Dean") thought all his dreams had come true - but his battle to become the man he wants to be is only just the beginning. Now, uncertain if a regular kid from a poor blue collar family can fit into the Academy's pressure-cooker atmosphere, and barely making the grade as a Freshman "plebe," Jake has one last shot at proving he has what it takes to become an officer in an institution that boasts a venerable 137-year history of focused discipline and determined excellence. With nothing left to lose, Jake decides to enter the notoriously fierce Navy boxing competition known as the Brigade Championships -- and face off against his arch-nemesis, Midshipman Lt. Cole (TYRESE GIBSON). Everything Jake has ever hoped for stands in the balance: the chance to make his father proud, to validate his Lieutenant's faith in him, to stand up for his fellow plebes, and most of all, to forge a different future. Directed by critically acclaimed indie director Justin Lin ("Better Luck Tomorrow"), comes this exhilarating comeback story of a courageous young sailor who discovers that some opportunities in life are worth fighting for. Jake's fellow classmates are comprised of a dynamic young cast that includes Jordana Brewster as the alluringly tough, female commander who helps to train Jake; Donnie Wahlberg as Lt. Cmdr. Burton, the officer who first decides to take a chance on Jake; and Chi McBride as the boxing coach who takes Jake from amateur swinger to focused warrior. --© Buena Vista Pictures [More]

Step right up and enjoy this dull, stiff, pointless retread. But if you think you've heard it all before -- you have, you really have -- then save your movie ticket allowance for something else.

If the powers behind this pasteboard mockup of a film wanted to remake AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, why didn't they just go ahead and do that? . . . [I]f they wanted to remake ROCKY, why didn't they just go ahead and do that?

Bulling ahead through hackneyed scene after hackneyed scene, it grinds out an hour and 48 minutes of nonstop cliche, never offering so much as a marginally clever line, never succumbing to an original thought, never veering from the rutted path.

Jake [is] forced to swallow his pride and ask girly Brewster to train him. It's a marginally subversive moment in a movie that otherwise falls in line.

It's a pleasure to watch James Franco and Tyrese Gibson square off against each other as two men heading for a showdown.

Annapolis is the kind of hybrid military movie that can really only be truly enjoyed with diminished expectations and a sharp sense of parody.

Actually, the lyrics to In the Navy are more sophisticated than Annapolis, which was assembled by the handy-dandy Disney make-a-movie kit and is loaded with parts borrowed from other films.

As a naval take on the boot-camp movie, it’s so bland and homogenized that it makes last year’s decidedly so-so Jarhead look audacious in comparison.

Judging Annapolis by its most appealing attributes (among all the cliches): It's not bad superficially, but neither is it all that it could be.

Annapolis throws the same punches as many of its inspirational fellow cadets and almost, but not quite, wins the fight.

Much as I enjoyed screenwriter Dave Collard's freshman effort, Out of Time, there's not much to say about his sophomore (and sophomoric) screenplay, which seems to have gleaned its insights from the fortune-cookie factory.

What Annapolis really is, more than a college movie or a boot-camp movie, is a boxing movie, and a run of the mill one at that.
