There's weird humor and some compassion here.

The theme of Eros overpowering rational self-preservation can be compelling, but Mr. Verow doesn't seem as interested in the psychology of his character as in the rough-sex rituals Todd is driven to perform.
Sordid beatings, joyless sex, and a sullen synth score create the air of a home-brewed '60s sexploitation-noir flick, or a pre-Stonewall pulp homosexual novel, complete with narrative clichés and the occasional bit of ugly beauty.
