Movie Info

Somewhat reminiscent of The Incredible Journey and Milo and Otis -- though much harsher in its approach -- Antarctica focusses in on a team of sled dogs, owned by a team of snowbound Japanese researchers. A relief team is long overdue, forcing the dogs to fend for themselves. Eight of the dogs break free from their chains, roaming the Antarctic wastes in search of food and shelter. Only two of the dogs survive the ordeal, indication enough that this film is not specifically designed for the … More

ANTARCTICA has many sad moments but these are undermined a little by its uneasy mix of fact and conjecture

Audience Reviews for Antarctica (Nankyoku Monogatari)

½

True-life drama that plays like a documentary except the camera crew couldn't have been there all about an aborted 1950's Japanese expedition to the South Pole and what happens to the husky dogs they leave behind chained together. It starts off slow, focusing on the men, but gets increasingly gripping as it moves to the dogs. Desperately sad too with a great soundtrack by Vangelis if you can hear it while you're snuffling into a hanky.
Postcript. If you visit Japan now, you can go see two of the dogs, stuffed.

True story and an exceptionally sad one. Recommend the original Japanese version with subtitles over the dubbed version, which makes the movie sound hokey. Warning -- the original version has scenes that reek of animal cruelty in filming the scenes. It is a bit long and slow-moving, but the cinematography is great, the music of Vangelis haunting, and the ending is guaranteed to make any animal lover cry. (Yes, I am)
