Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film. [More]

Reviews for Antwone Fisher
It's no surprise that as a director Washington demands and receives excellent performances, from himself and from newcomer Derek Luke.
Even Howard Stern and Eminem showed more humility in creating their onscreen portrayals than Fisher does.
Maybe as a world-class actor himself, Denzel knows how to get the most out of his performers.
At first I thought that it was just the black version of Good Will Hunting, but it turned into so much more.
a film of quiet dignity and calm intelligence that takes no shortcuts to its emotional payoff ... at times it even seems a little stolid and self-serious, a little too earnest for its own good.
Washington and Luke give honest, touching performances in an African-American exposition that refreshingly puts the spotlight on black aggression from a different, subtle point of view -- riveting in spite of its uneven and saccharine-coated tendencies
An uplifting drama ... What Antwone Fisher isn't, however, is original.
Here, Washington has taken a real-life memoir and turned it not into a sappy melodrama, but an honest, respectable and engaging character study in which the dramatics are just as important to the plot as plot itself.
With all its pedestrian moments, the film still has the power to sweep you up.
Eavesdrop on someone's psychoanalysis, someone with an attention-grabbingly troubled childhood
Denzel Washington gives a sensitive yet powerful performance as a Navy psychiatrist, and newcomer Derek Luke is a pleasant surprise as the title character.
In a perfect world you'd have pancakes every morning and every movie would be a 5. This is the real world and the movie is a 3.5
