For sure, Antwone Fisher is corny. But it's corny in a way that a Hollywood movie about a boy who just wants to go home ought to be corny.

Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film. [More]

Reviews for Antwone Fisher
There's a simplicity and heart to Antwone Fisher ... that's extremely appealing.
[Washington's] strong hand, keen eye, sweet spirit and good taste are reflected in almost every scene.
Washington directed, and like most actors-turned-directors he brings great care to establishing performances, favoring strong close-ups.
The level of acting elevates the material above pat inspirational status and gives it a sturdiness and solidity that we've long associated with Washington the actor.
Watchful, flinty, unexpectedly vulnerable -- and so cathartic it could wring tears from a stone.
If the movie is clunky and raw, it's also heartfelt, and director/star Denzel Washington is smart just to keep things simple and stay out of the way of the movie's improbably powerful autiobiographical story.
A film as modestly underplayed and as unassumingly classy as the star who also directed it.
Marks a strong directorial performance by Washington, who foregoes tricky maneuvers and allows the emotions and details of his story to carry the day.
The acting helps push the movie past its familiarity into something that rings earnest and true.
In his debut as a director, Washington has a sure hand. His work with actors is particularly impressive.
Luke is one actor who is sure to be with us in a big way for years to come.
While the film is rated PG-13 for language and the brawling, this is one film that high school teachers can use as a teaching tool without any rationalization.
Luke's performance as Antwone is strong and stirring enough to rekindle that vintage phrase 'a star is born.'
A dull, straight-forward autobiopic, devoid of nuance, idiosyncrasy and character.
I found myself getting choked up by the ending, which evokes the joy of knowing that a lot of people love and care about you.
Admittedly moving and even occasionally uplifting, "Fisher" just seems like a film road well-traveled so many other times.
Is Antwone Fisher’s story inspirational? Yes. Does he need to repeatedly tell us just how inspirational it is? No, but he does anyway. That’s what keeps the film from standing tall.
