Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film. [More]

An involving, inspirational drama that sometimes falls prey to its sob-story trappings.

The structure the film takes may find Matt Damon and Ben Affleck once again looking for residuals as this officially completes a Good Will Hunting trilogy that was never planned.

A movie that resonates with truth and caring and, thanks to the uncommon rapport between Luke and Washington, grabs at the heart like nothing else this year.

Though the screenplay -- written by the real-life Fisher -- seems a bit self-aggrandizing, even stone-hearted cynics would be wise to pack tissues.

Antwone Fisher's overriding honesty even survives the film's obligatory, sick-making crane-shot-with- swelling-music final image.

Celebrates family in a way that's deeply felt by the director and screenwriter/subject and no doubt will be shared by viewers of any ethnicity.

It is an inspirational, heart-tugging story of the kind Oscar might be willing to embrace.

That the real Antwone Fisher was able to overcome his personal obstacles and become a good man is a wonderful thing; that he has been able to share his story so compellingly with us is a minor miracle.

Induces the sort of catharsis that leaves you feeling released, enlightened and in deeper touch with humanity.

Offers an impressive melding of quietly radical images and ideas with, yes, an old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing holiday tearjerker.

It's a familiar story, but one that is presented with great sympathy and intelligence.

A crowd-pleasing tearjerker...a film whose earnestness and dignity almost (though not quite) overcome the narrative's sentimentality and lack of surprise.

The film works well as a conventional tear-jerker drama told in a straightforward no-nonsense manner.
