Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film. [More]

Fisher greedily encourages Washington and Hollywood to rape his integrity in the name of Ben Franklin, not to mention Oscar.

Much of the film seems to miss the mark emotionally, but the ending hits the bull’s-eye, and does so without sacrificing authenticity.

The problem with ANTWONE FISHER is that it has a screenplay written by Antwone Fisher based on the book by Antwone Fisher.

Yet another year-end, by-the-numbers, button-pushing biopic, but this one is sub-par even when compared to its sickly, tired brethren. It's a dime-a-dozen film that's being touted as a hit simply because it's Denzel Washington's directorial debut.

A nicely-drawn, humanistic character study and a genuinely romantic romance.

This film is easily one of the year’s best because it never hides its intentions, but still carries a heavy impact. Antwone Fisher's strength relies on simplicity, charm, and craftsmanship

Washington, in his debut as a director, delivers a solid piece of craftsmanship.

Uniformly well-performed and blessed with a spotless screenplay that could easily pass a naval inspection.

At first, the fact that this movie does not follow the usual pattern can feel disconcerting, even amateurish. Ultimately it gives the movie a kind of messiness and heart that provides extra authenticity.

So beautifully acted and directed, it's clear that Washington most certainly has a new career ahead of him if he so chooses.

The life of Antwone Fisher may indeed be one that cries out for a movie treatment but you wouldn't know it from this tepid bio.

All in all, this is the best debut behind the camera from a major actor in a long while.

Crafted with the same measured intensity and quiet authority found in his best onscreen work, Denzel Washington's debut behind the camera, Antwone Fisher, is an emotionally charged true-life story of one man's tenacity and eventual redemption.
