Harlem's Apollo Theater has been responsible for launching the careers of countless stars since its inception in 1934, when its world-famous amateur night began exposing audiences to little-known acts who would soon become legendary. From Ella Fitzgerald to Lauryn Hill, the club has remained the premiere venue for emerging and established African-American and Latino acts, and in 1983 it was named a federal, state, and city landmark in honor of its vast cultural contributions. An enormous amount of history, culture, and entertainment is housed within the Apollo, and this documentary affords the chance to revisit and explore the legacy. This anniversary show featured tributes by Denzel Washington, Willie Nelson, Natalie Cole, Ashanti, Blair Underwood, and many others. A memorable night is fleshed out by clips delving into the rich history of the theater. Also included are performances not seen in the original TV broadcast of the show, by Brian McKnight, Patti Austin, and Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick. [More]
