YES! The two Andersons direct circles around these fools. I'd add Leos Carax, just because I know it'd irritate such spineless and visionless punks (in the jailhouse sense) who vote in this meaningless pageant.

It's an absolute sin that PTA is not on this list....Or Wes. Every film PTA does he should be up for, as well as QT now that he is in the zone. However, the only person i'd really remove from this list is Tom Hooper, not because I didn't enjoy the film, it just doesn't compare.

Just for the record, the #1 film of 2012 according to Rotten Tomatoes is Kirby Dick's THE INVISIBLE WAR, 100% with 55 reviews. Let's hope it snags an Oscar nomination.

Let me guess, you hated "The King's Speech" but love "Avatar" and "Transformers", right?

Jan 9 - 01:27 PM

Gary Devenport

Gary Devenport

No, I actually liked The King's Speech for your information. I just don't think Hooper's direction on Les Mis is worthy of this award. And what if I do like Avatar? People are allowed to like different genres of films, it's a subjective medium. Boy aren't you a snob.

Jan 9 - 04:59 PM

Gage Kent

Gage Kent

Lay off dude. I liked King's Speech but agree with Gary on this one. Les Mis was nothing special. People will forget about it in a few years. Heck, I even forget about it. Why do you have to bring Avatar and Transformers into this? I can tell from your profile pic that you have great taste, but you could be a little less snobby.

Jan 9 - 07:11 PM

OK, I was just motivated because of the M-word. Haven't seen Les Mis, but Tom Hooper is a great director nonetheless.

Resident Evil 5 is more certainly the more deserving film, and with the more superior director... (I joke, I joke). Wes Anderson should certainly be on there, and Tarantino.

Now there is one of the great mysteries. The only film he made that I thought was okay was EVENT HORIZON (in theaters too), and even then I have no desire to see it again. Everything else is pure garbage.

Even Affleck in his first nomination looks like a AAA director compared to this Hooper guy. At least he has no chance. Probably will be Bigelow or Spielberg.

Jan 8 - 03:52 PM

Hooper has already won once and Les Miserables was actually a really interesting movie thanks in large part to Hooper's direction IMO. Also, Affleck's directorial skills are nothing to sneeze at. The man makes good movies.

Hooper is overrated in my opinion. Les Mis suffered from Hooper's poor cinematography. Life of Pi was nothing short of extraordinary. Beautiful and powerful. I never saw a director make anything anthropomorphic like Lee did with the animals. Never saw Argo, but the common ratiocination is that he'll win because he's the only one of the five that hasn't won the best director Oscar yet. Want to see Zero Dark Thirty.

One of the negative criticsms was that "Les Miserables" was not bad but some of the singing particularly from Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman was simply unbearable to listen to- one may have to bring ear muffs upon watching it!

Jan 8 - 05:44 PM

WS S.

WS Shannon

Hugh Jackman was a great actor and singer, and Russell Crowe wasn't bad, but nothing special. Unbearable is an overstatement

Jan 9 - 01:43 PM

Bigbrother

Big Brother

See I disagree with both. I agree that Life of Pi was visually stunning, but I felt some of the dialog and acting performances dragged it down and I thought Les Miserables was much more effective as a movie than I ever thought it was as a stage production. The singing isn't up to stage standard, but it's not distractingly bad either. Thought Jackman, Crowe and especially Hathaway and the girl who played Eponine(nothing wrong with her voice) gave really strong, intense, personal performances.

Jan 8 - 09:01 PM

Dave J

Dave J

When you say performances, do you 'also' mean the singing as well?

Jan 9 - 12:37 PM

Bigbrother

Big Brother

To an extent. As I said based on pure quality of sound the actors in the film are not as good as their West End/Broadway counterparts, as you'd expect, but on quality over overall performance (Conveying emotion and weight) I think they were much stronger. Particularly if you watch Anne Hathaway give the Dreamed a Dream performance she's probably not in the top 100 people to ever do that song as a singer, but the raw emotion she puts into makes the performance very powerful and the way she sings the song adds greatly to it. When I saw it on stage the songs were good, but I never really connected with the story. When you see the movie and the way Hooper brings you right up close to everything it gives the story and the songs that accompany it an emotional resonance that was missing before. At least IMO.

Honestly I would take out Lee and Spielberg and replace them with PTA and QT. Their directing achievments were average at best, stuff we've seen before. Affleck, Bigelow, and Hooper deserve to be there cause they achieved greatness with their films

I'm not underestimate the other nominations but I will go for lee.. I don't think Life of Pi will become this memorable if there isn't Lee sitting as a director.. Hooper is better in King Speech, Bigelow has done that in Hurt Locker, Spielberg is a specialist in history epic drama, just like Schindler's List and Empire of the Sun and Argo surely the best thing ever happened from Affleck, but Legend of Pi wouldn't be this amazing if it isn't Lee's creative vision..

I sincerely hope Ben Affleck gets it...Argo was sheer brilliance on his part.
