RT's Oscar Picks 2013 - Results

Summary

We at Rotten Tomatoes freely admit we're not the world's greatest Oscar prognosticators. Still, we did a bit better than usual this year; while there were some surprises (Sound Editing was a tie?!) and a few winners that aren't all that surprising in retrospect, most of our predictions came true at the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Read on to see how our forecast squared with the final results! Back to Article

This is a pretty boring winners list(except for Lawrence). Looks like the Oscars will be pretty dull. Great year for movies though. Too bad the best ones won't win.

Couldn't agree more. Phoenix's performance was amazing. The best of the year by far. Day-Lewis has mentioned it on more than one occasion. I'm pretty sure that Day-Lewis believes that Phoenix's performance was the best of the year; even better than his own as Lincoln.

I wonder if this doesn't have anything to do with his Kaufmann-esque antics from a few years ago. The entertainment industry doesn't like being mocked.

Speaking of make-up and hairstyling, can anyone tell me *why* the hobbits' ear are pointed in the films when they aren't in the books? Who thought that one up?

Probably gonna be pretty close to the result. I am however a bit shocked by the presence of a poorly constructed paint by numbers rom com in the best picture discussion.

I disagree on this with Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score; Best Animated Feature I think will most likely go to Wreck-It-Ralph and Best Original Score is probably going to go to Life of Pi. I agree with their other picks though.

Sorry But Denzel Deserves BA For Flight More Than DDL For Lincoln...And Christoph Waltz Deserves BSA For Django About 187,000 Times More Than Tommy Lee...Lincoln Is Like The LeBron James Of The Oscars...Everybody Plays Favorites...It Wasn't Even That Good Of A Movie.

Sorry Jennifer Lawrence, but I want Chastain to take home Best Actress. I love Lawrence, but Chastain was just wonderful.

It looks very likely that Argo will win Best Picture, although Lincoln could proably win. And I think that Tony Kushner will win for his screenplay. But I really hope that Waltz will win Best Supporting Actor, although I would not complain if Hoffman won.

In all complete honesty, I agree that what I see here will win (besides Brave. Wreck-it Ralph has it), but I just... I just want Silver Linings Playbook to win huge. I think it's quite deserving. Blah. At least Jennifer Lawrence will win her well deserved oscar.

But seriously, if you're not going to nominate Ben Affleck for directing, give it to someone who worked hard, did a fantastic job, and isn't already the king of best directing oscars.

You shunned "Skyfall" in every single category it was in except Best Original Song...the score and cinematography was incredible :(

I wouldn't say they "shunned it." They are picking who will win, not who they think deserves to win. I have Argo, Jennifer Lawrence, Day-Lewis, Hathaway, Lee Jones, and Spielberg all winning. However, I think Zero Dark Thirty, Riva, Phoenix, Hathaway, Hoffman, and Bigelow or PTA should win.

ParaNorman SHOULD win. Frankly, it's one of the finest animated films ever made. As for Life of Pi's Cinematography, It is most likely going to take home the Oscar even though Roger Deakins photography was better. Still, both enhanced the visual story telling. Zero Dark Thirty should win best Editing. That final 30-40 minutes alone is proof of that. Everything else seems pretty standard though.

Lincoln is definitely a better film than Argo and has a better screenplay. I have a feeling Amour may surprise us with Best Director and Original Screenplay.

Though the backlash caused by Affleck being snubbed for Best Director can be heard on yet undiscovered planets in the outermost regions of the cosmos, I think that Zero Dark Thirty is being dismissed quite unjustly. Bigelow definitely should've been nominated for directing, and the film is slightly better than Argo and surely better than Silver Linings Playbook. However, if you check the betting odds and expert predictions, ZDT is nowhere to be found as a serious contender to win. The script was phenomenal. It was crisp and brimming with years of meticulous research by Mark Boal. I also think that Riva should win Best Actress, but America is way too enamored with Jennifer Lawrence for that to happen on Sunday. Lastly, Phoenix deserves the Oscar for Best Actor. His performance was absolutely stunning, and it has been noted by Day-Lewis himself in a few of his many acceptance speeches for BA accolades for Lincoln.

Please, Bigelow's directing was egotistical and un-inventive, just like it was in the Hurt Locker, and, in some places, even hamfisted. The film was dull, plodding, and somehow managed to make something that should have been exciting (the entire climax) boring. The writing was pretentious and egocentric, there was NO character development, and aside from Chastain's role, they parade characters in front of us and then have them disappear. Then they expect us to be shocked upset when one of them gets blown to smithereens in one of the most insulting bits of "foreshadowing" in cinema. I'll stick with Argo, which is certainly most deserving of the award.
