RT's Oscar Picks 2013 - Results

Summary

We at Rotten Tomatoes freely admit we're not the world's greatest Oscar prognosticators. Still, we did a bit better than usual this year; while there were some surprises (Sound Editing was a tie?!) and a few winners that aren't all that surprising in retrospect, most of our predictions came true at the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Read on to see how our forecast squared with the final results! Back to Article

In a perfect world, Naomi Watts would win Best Actress.

For what? For showing her leg with a torn off skin done with CG in a crappy crying-on-shoulder movie that is not even loyal to the actual events?

Well, I saw a different performance then you did. She was heartbreaking. Also, the real person, Maria - would disagree with you on the loyalty of the way the events were depicted onscreen.

''Argo'' does not deserve Best Picture by any means.

Argo TOTALLY overrated. Lincoln should win best pic and Daniel Day Lewis best actor.

I agree with the consensus, that while I love Pixar and everything Scottish, 'Brave' pretty much blew like a typhoon over the Northern Sea...

I mostly like these predictions, but as Wreck-It-Ralph would say- "I'd better win!"

It's not that I don't love Brave, but I want Wreck-It-Ralph to win, both because it deserves it more and because it's about time that Disney brought home an Oscar.

On a slightly different note, I have to say that I am amazed at the diversity of opinions about what should win Best Animated Film. Wreck-It-Ralph is clearly the favorite, but there are plenty of people who disagree. This seems to be the first year in the history of this award in which more than two of the nominees have a chance.

Here's what I think:

Best Picture - I think it will definitely be Argo or Lincoln? Watched both and, while Argo was more entertaining, Lincoln was better overall. However, my favourite this year was Django Unchained. Les Mis was a mistake, but all other nominees are great. Skyfall could've made it, though?

Best Actor - No doubt, Day-Lewis

Best Director - Spielberg. Though Lee deserves it. Must've been hard to direct a film where half your main cast is a VERY realistic tiger.

Best Actress - Very controversial. While I don't have much of an opinion with this one, I would say the Academy will either reward Riva or Lawrence, with the edge for Riva.

Best Supporting Actor - I want Waltz, but it'll be either Jones or De Niro. They were all, however, fantastic.

Best Supporting Actress - Hathaway's basically won. Fields may be competition, however?

Best Animated Picture - Frankenweenie, though Ralph was my favourite :)

Best Original Screenplay - DJANGO!!! WOOOHOOO! Though, there's some strong competish?

Best Adapted Screenplay - It'll be, again, Argo or Lincoln. Lincoln should win, but Argo won't be winning much, despite winning Best Picture, so the Academy will probably award them this one.

Loved Argo - audience applauded at end which is unusual here. I'm very disappointed Afleck didn't get a director nod.
I loved Hugh Jackman and am only sorry he and DDL didn't do these brilliant acting performances in separate years since they both deserve awards!
I loved Lincoln and think it deserves awards also.
Unusual to have this number of great movies in a single year.

Everyone who thinks that Wreck-it Ralph will win the animated award needs to remember that the Academy aren't fond of things like that. The whole video game concert won't sit with them. I would love Wreck-it Ralph to win because I think it's the best film in the category - despite me being a staple Pixar fan - but Brave or Frankenweenie will probably take it.

And why weren't Javier Bardem or Judi Dench nominated for their categories? As for Skyfall itself, the film is too British for the Academy.

I should correct my previous post: I really enjoyed "Wreck-It Ralph", and if I was judging by fun and entertainment value, I would probably choose it to win. But I think "ParaNorman" is the best-made of the bunch, since I found "Ralph" to have quite a few plot holes/conveniences, as well as nothing groundbreaking, just a good Disney film set in the video game world. "Frankenweenie" was very entertaining as well, but it felt incomplete (what was the point of having the Elsa van Helsing and Mayor Burgemeister characters?), and "Pirates!" was just amusing without being Oscar-worthy. And I actually enjoyed "Brave", but sadly think it's the weakest nominee.

I'm going to go beserk if Skyfall doesn't win Cinematography. That movie looked a million times better than Life of Pi. I'm sick of these all CGI movies winning >:(

Agree with most, except production design and animated feature. Anna Karenina and Les Miserables are at war for this category. Best animated feature, I would like 'Frankenweenie' to win. Best Original Score, too. Life of Pi strong competitor.
