With a planet-killing asteroid on a collision course with Earth, it's up to a motley crew of scientists and oil drillers (yes, oil drillers) to save the earth. With 18 days to impact, a team from NASA (led by Billy Bob Thornton) frantically tries to find a solution but ends up turning to an outside contractor. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his team of oilmen are called upon to save the planet as only they can. ARMAGEDDON may boast impressive special effects, but it's the cast--including Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, and Owen Wilson--that gives the film its humor and heart. Tyler's father Steven Tyler and his band Aerosmith contributed the Oscar-nominated hit "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" to the soundtrack. [More]

Reviews for Armageddon
In a dismal summer for popcorn movies, this epic may be the silliest but still looks like the best shot.
one of the most calculating films of all of this year’s blockbusters.
...as a summer popcorn flick, the film has its moments and is ultimately enjoyable, even though the fate of the planet seems to take a backseat plotwise to the fate of Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck's goo-goo-eye-making.
...this film reaches its real dramatic power because it embroils us in deeper issues of heart and spirit.
Along with the rest of the audience, I jumped when I was meant to jump, laughed when I was meant to laugh, and swallowed a lump in my throat when I was meant to feel moved.
A few daring antiheroes who have nothing to lose prove themselves up to the challenge of saving the world.
In the end, the script is probably the only true thing that I felt was lacking.
...the latest in a line of increasingly-stupid action pictures that amazes audiences with flashy special effects and nifty action sequences, but leaves them high and dry in both the character and story departments.
A Godzilla-sized blockbuster -- it's an outrageous spectacle, without many brains to speak of, but its heart in the right place.
...a nacho-munching, popcorn-eating cheese-fest of special effects, fun and 144 minutes of brainless entertainment.
What's really invigorating about Armageddon is that it's a true adventure film.
Do you ride rollercoasters for insight into your psyche? NO. Do you see Armageddon to be lambasted with great special effects, & incredible acts of derring-do? Yes, you do.
For sheer escapist entertainment, it is quite successful. On the other hand, there are a few too many angles from which to attack this film — science, depth, originality, editing — you name it.
Armageddon is the ultimate summer movie, and as such should be taken for what it is.
