Arrested Development Movie On Its Way?
by Jeff Giles | February 04, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Judging from the way the TV show went down, it would likely be one of the best-reviewed, lowest-grossing films of all time -- but fans of the dearly departed Fox series Arrested Development will doubtless be pleased to hear that a film spinoff is in the works. Back to Article

I too would prefer more episodes, but anything would be nice so I can see how the George-Michael/Maeby marriage is going.

Why?!?

If we all noticed it only won the Emmy for Best Comedy to try and boost ratings for it. That is all these shows were for in the first place. Back when the depression came about, the movie industry was failing because people could not afford to go so they created a awards show to show off the best of the film industry to get people back out and watch movies. Emmys are the same thing...did we all see that Arrested Development was cancelled after two seasons? And they call it a success? Ummm...pause, reflect, moving on.

Did you also notice when 30 Rock won and Tina Fey thanked her dozens of fans? This is another attempt at boosting rating and viewers.

I liked the first time Arrested Development came out and they had a song called "Mister Wendell."

umm... not quite sure what you're getting at there, but I know I'd like to see some more Arrested Development. It was a hilarious show, and it has one of the most loyal fan bases for a comedy show I've ever seen. I just watched all 3 seasons on DVD in the last week. I'm pumped.

Great news - but I'm putting all my energy into hoping they do a worthwhile job and not do the movie just to make the movie. A bad follow-up movie would be worse than no movie at all, in my opinion.

Arrested Development is one of the best TV shows ever. I'd absolutely love to see more seasons made, but a movie? I don't know if it will work. The comedy style of the show just works so well as a TV show.

Don't get me wrong, I'll definately see the movie.

Because most Americans are too stupid to understand the humor of the show. Americans need dick jokes and can't follow a story. Look at our box office numbers. We go to "Meet the Spartans" and every crappy "Saw" movie that comes out.

"...so if everyone loves it why does it have bad ratings?"

The show was famously involved and intricate, with jokes that referenced past jokes, flashbacks and flashforwards, tight plotting, with lots of quick cuts, documentary style footage, random asides, recurring characters and guest stars, and no laugh track to indicate where the jokes were. Arrested Development required the viewer to *pay attention* and that is where it differed from virtually every other sitcom on TV. It wasn't something you could put on and enjoy mindlessly.

Yeah, well if "Arrested Development" was so good, how come it failed after 2.5 seasons?

You know, apart from the fact that it was a 30-minute sitcom that could in no way be syndicated (a breed of one), boasted a fantastic, hilarious cast of mostly unlikable and unidentifiable characters, packed well over 200 jokes into each episode, with each joke starting out small and subtle until snowballing into insane running gags throughout the season, was marketed as a show about jail and magic, and oh yeah...was one of the most expensive sitcoms ever filmed.

But that's all speculation anyway. Really, the reason "Arrested Development" failed is because it sucks. Nothing good ever fails, and America sees to it that's how it works.

Arrested Development is one of the two best sitcoms of the last decade, absolutely transcending the genre. The only other show that comes hear to it's level is the amazing Peep Show.

God I hope a movie works out...

Funny how the people that don't like Arrested Development type like 12 year-olds, and the people that do have the English language down pretty well. You think that opinions on the show have anything to do with intelligence, or no?

In other words, if you're about to reply and put down one of the most brilliant shows in the history of television, you should probably stop and consider the fact that you may just be a moron.

Hopefully this news can boost DVD sales as well as general interest in the show. G4 should play the reruns more often too. If that all goes well and the movie happens I don't see why more episodes wouldn't be a possibility. If Family Guy and Futurama can come back from being cancelled Arrested Development should have a shot.

Could it be that one of the best small screen comedies ever will come to the big screen? With the recent film success of Michael Cera and Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett's recent turns on 30 Rock, perhaps there's a chance for some box office success here. Hopefully, it would just be a two-hour version of the television show, Ron Howard narration and all.

i love how we all love to bash on America, the international market is still important for the American tv and film industries, yet it probably did worse than in the US there.

There is "The Masses" as some sort of entity, and historically, though more educated and refined today than ever, the masses arent supposed to be the smartest, or they just wouldnt be the masses... This happens in the us and outside (have you seen french commercial movies?? Id rather have crap like rush hour). Of course, people from other countries love to feel more intellectual than the actual nation in question just because that person and his or her friends believe the movies to be stupid and of course the masses jump in the same bandwagon to feel more important than a nation that is constantly showing power through influence (for better or worse), all this while they pay millions to watch fantastic four (for worse?)...

In the end, the masses dictate what's on and arrested development didnt make it... but that is because of the american and international publics' "dumbness" combined with many other factors.

Regarding the movie, I am not that excited, its hard to imagine it being good, but I hope it is. Having the show back would be better, I think...
