Total Recall: Overlooked Christmas Gems

Summary

I grew up in a household that owned four Christmas albums -- Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, and the Boston Pops. And that was it. So part of what I enjoy about Christmas as an adult is the discovery of the vast thicket of vintage holiday music out there, from Pearl Bailey and Lena Horne to the Ray Conniff Singers and the Three Sons. Same deal with movies; I came of age in the 1970s, the golden era of It's a Wonderful Life being in the public domain and airing all day, every day, throughout the month of December. As I got older (and wrote the book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas), I was delighted to find that I had as many new buried treasures among Christmas films as I've had with music.

Tell that to my sister. We have this argument every year. It has everything you'd want in a Christmas movie: Christmas songs, decorations and family. Sure it has tons of violence, but that doesn't mean it's not a Christmas movie.

"Eyes Wide Shut" and "Prometheus" are both great Christmas movies, even though they aren't the type of films that come to mind when talking about classic holiday movies.

Prometheus begins before Christmas and ends on New Year. Faith is also part of the film's themes.

Prometheus is in no way a christmas movie, just because of the date in some parts of the film.

Agreed on Arthur Christmas and The Ice Harvest (haven't seen the rest)

I wish John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton would do more movies together, I'm only aware of this one and Pushing Tin. They have a great chemistry.

Out of those, I've only seen "Arthur Christmas", which was decent. (SPOILER) I thought the UFO subplot, while it provided a poignant parting moment between Grandsanta and "Evie", was too silly. (END SPOILER)

Considering the ratings that most of these movies got they were probably overlooked for good reason. Rare Exports should totally be on this list, BTW.

Funny that he mentioned Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, as it's the first thing I thought of when it comes to overlooked Holiday movies. It nearly matches Die Hard as my favorite Christmas movie, personally. A shame it didn't get more notice at the box office, though it seems to be faring much better on DVD/Bluray.

Saw Gremlins the other day that is definitely overlooked as a "Christmas movie", and I think it holds up well aside from some of the stop-motion effects.

The Star Wars Christmas Special is very overlooked.

It taught me how to live life through building things, how to successfully close down a bar if I ever had to, and how to cook.
STIR WHIP STIR WHIP WHIP WHIP STIR BEAT

no, this was seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen, but I think everyone should see it simply because of how bad it is. It is a gem because it's so hard to find (maybe not now with the internet but still) and because of how horrendously bad it is (even worse than the Star Wars prequels).

Yep. That's my holiday gem. The roller coaster of emotions I go through it (laughing until I can't breathe, and being so annoyed that I could eat my own face off) is indescribable (although I technically just did describe them).

I really liked Arthur Christmas, but I *really* like animation. I think it deserved the Oscar nom over either Puss In Boots or KFP2.

I would've picked Batman Returns as the best Christmas movie.
