As Smart as They Are' documents the collaboration between One Ring Zero, a band whose unique sound combines unconventional instruments with unorthodox techniques and an ensemble cast of award-winning writers who each contributed original lyrics. One Ring Zero's founding members, Joshua Camp and Michael Hearst, first established their literary ties while performing the live musical score for an off-Broadway production written by novelist Clay McLeod Chapman. After moving to New York, the duo discovered a curious unmarked store in Brooklyn that doubled as an office for McSweeney's Publishing. In addition to selling an odd assortment of products ranging from small rubber cubes to lumberjack supplies, the peculiar storefront also doubled as the venue for a weekly literary reading series, which brought a variety of both burgeoning and established writers to the tiny space.
