Johnson Whittaker, a talented black cadet, was viciously attacked by three disguised fellow students. Though he knew the perpetrators were racists who resented his presence at school, administrators chose not to believe that allegation. Instead, they added insult to injury by court-martialing Whittaker for "staging his own attack" -- supposedly, to avoid a philosophy exam. At the trial, the young man's two attorneys -- one a white bigot, the other a black Ivy League graduate -- struggled over how to formulate the defense. Will his lawyers put aside their differences and exact justice, or will the victim, not the attackers, be the one punished? [More]
