First-time missionaries Martin (Aidan Quinn) and Hazel Quarrier (Kathy Bates) travel to a small town in the middle of the Brazilian jungle in order to convert the natives. Upon their arrival they meet Leslie (John Lithgow) and Andy Huben (Daryl Hannah), a more experienced missionary couple, who lead the American Evangelical Society. As the Quarriers set out for their remote and possibly dangerous mission outpost, they face the native Niaruna Indian tribe and find themselves deeply immersed in the foreign world of the jungle natives. This chilling journey of self-discovery also follows two mercenaries--half-Cheyenne Lewis Moon (Tom Berenger) and his assistant, Wolf (musician Tom Waits), who have been employed by the Brazilian government to destroy the rainforest and drive the Indians off their land.
