Movie Info

In this Japanese sci-fi adventure, Japan and the rest of the planet is being destroyed by a deadly series of earthquakes. Explorers soon discover why: beneath the sea is an enormous city, Mu, and to keep it going, they have been stealing energy from the Earth's core. They refuse to stop and so the Japanese government pleads with the commander of the air, land, and sea supership, the Atragon, to help them destroy Mu. Unfortunately, the skipper cares nothing for saving the world. But when the Mu-folk steal his own daughter, the commander changes his mind. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovimore

Audience Reviews for Atragon (Kaitei gunkan) (Atoragon: Flying Supersub)

It took forever for this film to show up from Netflix, Also its a high price film even from Amazon. Toho Studios has some of the best 1950-1960 Sci-Fi out there and this is no exception. Believe to be a Sci-Fi Favorite to most. I expected something like Godzilla, Mothra, but what I got was a flying Sub, Now there is a neat idea, and this sub can drill through rock. The english dubs make it more laughable. Most films I watch with original language and english subtitles but just couldn?t get into this one. Have to let this one squeak by with a 3 star rating.

A bit boring but nicely paced. Manda only appears a little bit but there characters aren't too bad and the story is decent. Fairly interesting moments and a decent addition to any kaiju movie collection.

Atragon is a delightfully fun piece of early 60s, Japanese science fiction from Ishiro (Godzilla) Honda, the master of fantastic Japanese cinema in the 50s and 60s. In this film, a vanished continent begins attacking the world from under the sea and only a super-secret submarine can save the day. Cheesy, b-movie, sci-fi fun...and, yes, there is some kaiju action later in the film with the giant serpent Manda who is the guardian of the Mu Empire. A fun film for fans of 50s sci-fi and kaiju films.
