Critic Review - New York Magazine

Schrader really isn't interested in Crane except as the straw man for his moral lessons about sin and sexuality and the nature of celebrity.

That is his focus and it makes the film completely boring, Kinnear's performance never once makes me feel like I am watching Bob Crane. Sex is pleaurable and has tons of nuances and that would make an excellent movie under the direction of an educated director, but sexual behavior is never explored in this film, instead we get a pathetic moral diatribes that are completely immoral in their prudish transport back to Victorian times AND it bores us to death. Pathetic!
