...a big, dumb movie built to make money but hardly worthy of serious examination. Avatar isn't only critic-proof, it resists serious criticism. You might as well analyze a beach ball.
Can't argue with this.

Can't be said better...

how in the dark regions of hell can you say that???????????????????? Avatar is a brilliantly constructed piece of art. People spent 15 years on it and what do you do? Trash it. Man, you have no taste. Please gain respect for James Cameron. And FYI, Avatar has officially been named BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD. It passed Titanic, also by James Cameron. Learn to appreciate a good movie please.Your friends,the12yearoldcritics

as a twelve y.o. you need to learn the difference between subjective and objective, the "best movie in the world" is subjective and CANNOT be quantified...secondly it did not surpass titanic in ticket sales only in money, since titanic tickets cost about half as much on average its only about half way there domestically...im FACT avatar is like #26 in line in domestic box office ticket sales and no where close to forrest gump, star wars and many others...it may eventually get there but not for a long time...

we dont care. we are 12. thank you for implying we are dumb. likewise. we are 12, the critics of the future. you are probably an adult with the right to an opinion(even though we hate it.) and we suck at math so sorr-eeee. deal with it and be nicer you hurt our feelings. Love the12yearoldcritics.P.S we are seeing Avatar for the 7th time so there. HAHAHAHAHA

Couldn't have said it better. People love crap like New Moon and Twilight, yet they don't like this?! This is an incredible movie.
Aug 8 - 09:21 PM
Oh God, you probably masturbate to Avatar, don't you?? The funny thing is you purposely went out of your way to inform us that it took them 15 years to make this unoriginal piece of garbage... Do you hear yourself? 15 years... and it was still HORRIBLE! Lol. God, you're dumb. Watching you try to attempt an intellegent conversation regarding cinematic technique is like watching caveman use tools for the first time.

You misspelled intelligent :)Great movie though, and this review is just kind of sad

No son, it is the most PROFITABLE movie in the world. That isn't necessarily "the best."

Actually, if you google exactly that, "highest domestic box office ticket sales", you will find that, adjusted for inflation, Avatar is ranked #2 behind Titanic...I found the movie extremely entertaining myself, but I also find myself at odds with critics. The movie "Sideways" several years ago was given many great reviews by critics, was nominated for several Oscars and won one, and I thought that movie was a waste of time to watch. To each his own.
Jan 30 - 08:51 AM
i did google it and here it is-A look at domestic grosses adjusted for inflation shows a more realistic view of "Avatar"'s performance. In the U.S., "Avatar" has grossed $555 million making it the second highest grossing domestic (as opposed to worldwide) film of all time. Titanic is temporarily still in the lead here with $600.8 million. But adjusting for ticket price for inflation, Avatar ranks as the 26th highest grossing film in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo. Number one? "Gone With The Wind" with $1.5 billion adjusted gross in the U.S. "Star Wars" ranks second with $1.3 billion.Cameron's "Titanic" ranks sixth (just behind "The Ten Commandments") with an adjusted $943 million take in the U.S.

just saw your correction...sorry ivan

What is it with movie critics these days? Every movie they actually do not criticize are very crappy movies. Avatar is one of the greatest movies I have had the pleasure to see. What critics must not realize is that the producers of these movies are making them to appeal to an audience. I doubt that they will make a movie to appeal to a bunch of old farts who's job it is to criticize his/her movie, cause I do not believe they can give two sh*ts what critics have to say about there movies. And yes, Cameron is trying to make some money off of this movie. Who is not? Movies are expensive to make and hard as **** to make, especially a movie of this quality. If this movie makes a substantial amount of money, it is obviously doing its doing its job, appealing to the audience.

I'm sorry, my apologies to Chris A.......I was looking at the wrong page :P. He is correct, Avatar is like #26 in domestic box office ticket sales, and #2 in gross
Jan 30 - 08:54 AM
forget inflation....and sales because movies cost so much more these days inflation or not, that maybe people may not go back 2-3 times as they may have done with movies in the past....ie with ticket sales...and avatar has only been out a month or a little over a month and has surpassed so many other movies....so avatar really is a phenomenon....and gone with the wind...good movie but boring...way too long....avatar is just the new great movie of the decade, century etc....
Jan 30 - 12:17 PM
you're points are convoluted to say the least, the more a movie costs to make only lessens its bix office gross, and adjusted for inflation avatar cost 20 more to make than star wars so it is irrelevant...and people go see avatar repeatedly as much as any mo ie has ever been seen over by an audience thats a fact AND it opened in over 3000 theaters whereas movies 20 years ago opened in a few hundred theaters...ALL POINTS THAT LEAD TO MORE TICKET SALES NOT LESS, anyway you slice it avatar has the advantage...and movie of the century??? lol modern movies are only 70 years old, please....its not the best movie ever, even of the is a stretch since its still in the decade with many movies including titanic that it has t surpassed in tic sales and will never surpass in quality...
Jan 30 - 01:53 PM
too many typos on my phone sorry...it cost 20 times more than star wars adjusted for inflation....and not the movie of the decade either
Jan 30 - 01:56 PM
honestly thats dumb i think avatar is one of the best movies i have ever seen
Jan 31 - 03:39 PM
GREAT review. Thank you for trying to knock some sense into these half-wits that can't see an inch past this flawed excuse for a "great" movie. As an aspiring filmmaker I can't even begin to explain how frustrated I've been these past 7 weeks watching a movie like this being boasted as one of the greatest films of all time. After it won best picture I almost cracked.

I think what some people miss is there are different types of movies out there; movies to entertain, inform, inspire, be original and so on. This is where the heated arguements and disgust originates from when what the movie was supposed to do is analyzed/criticized by someone who doesn't see it as it is.Avatar is to entertain as John Adams was to inform if you compare it roughly. If you came to the movie to enjoy originality then you may say it was quite the dissappointment, same would go for any other mind set other than coming to Avatar expecting to be dazzeled by a creative world and wonderful effects woven together to support its not-so-original storyline.Another way to look at Avatar's storyline is how something is performed. If you are really into music you probably would rather hear the New York Symphony play Cannon in D over your friend's daughter's 8th grade orchestra. This analogy can also be used for games, books, and other entertaining media.Overall I enjoyed the movie for what it was and did not mind the storyline that so many say was a copy of Dances With Wolves or Pocahontas or any others that people thought up, since for me it was the movie that displayed and told the story on a completely different scale making it all the more entertaining.

I don't understand your rating, Isn't 85/100 a good score, it's an 8.5/10...(Impressive maths, I know)
Oct 27 - 08:09 AM
i agree, but why did you give it an 85/100?
Jun 21 - 08:47 AM
It was just Dances with Wolves animated. It took them 15 years to animate the movie, 15 to write the script. And Dances with Wolves was better anyways.
Sep 13 - 12:18 AM
15 days to write the script is the witty shot I meant to get in there.
Sep 13 - 12:19 AM
Wait... An 85/100 is Rotten?
Nov 10 - 11:24 AM
How can 85% be rotten? That is extremely high for a rotten review
