Five Favorite Films With Avatar's Sam Worthington

The star of James Cameron's sci-fi epic reveals the secrets to his action man success

KT

Audiences down under have been familiar with Australian actor Sam Worthington for a few years now, but for the rest of the world it's almost as though the guy appeared out of nowhere. This year he's already starred in Terminator Salvation (some critics suggesting he was the best thing about the film), and will soon headline 2010's amped-up remake of Clash of the Titans. Then, of course, there's his pivotal role in arguably 2009's most anticipated film -- James Cameron's 3-D sci-fi epic Avatar. So just how did this little-known actor become the planet's go-to action guy? Maybe it's got something to do with his taste in movies...

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989, 82% Tomatometer)
Lethal Weapon 2 Lethal Weapon 2 -- because that's the movie where I thought, 'If those guys are doing that and getting paid for it, I want in.' [laughs]

Mad Max 2, aka The Road Warrior (1981, 100% Tomatometer)
Mad Max 2 Mad Max 2, along with The Year of Living Dangerously. As far as I'm concerned that was a time of filmmaking in Australia when we were excelling. And I can watch Mad Max 2 over and over again.

The Year of Living Dangerously (1983, 96% Tomatometer)
The Year of Living Dangerously And The Year of Living Dangerously, I love it because it's an Australian movie not set in Australia.

Beverly Hills Cop (1984, 83% Tomatometer)
Beverly Hills Cop Beverly Hills Cop, 'cause I think it's Eddie Murphy at his finest. You know, we think of Norbit and things like that nowadays... but go watch Beverly Hills Cop to see the man in top form.

Die Hard (1988, 94% Tomatometer)
Die Hard Die Hard is the best action movie ever. [laughs] Nailed them out, didn't I?

Seems to have a thing for Mel Gibson

Premo Beat

Premo Beat on 12-7-2009 04:13 PM

He's Australian. It's like Germans and Hasselhoff.

Pretty pedestrian list, but I can't say I don't enjoy all of them.

Lots of action/comedies. He seems like a pretty cool guy :D

Mad Max 2 is my favorite of the list.

Great picks!!! I like the notion of how he mentions these movies without even having to mention any of the actors starring in them for the exception of Eddie Murphy. The fact that Mel Gibson is in 3 out of the 5 movies he likes was not even a factor to consider, to me is professional.

Ha! Awesome list! This must be the best one I've seen so far. I love Worthington's work. He was pretty much the only thing that worked about Terminator Salvation. In my opinion, he is the only true action star of his younger generation. He truly has the potential to reach Bruce Willis, Eastwood, etc. status. Also, Avatar also looks interesting and I'll be sure to check it out at an IMAX.

lol @ saying this dude would achieve what eastwood had achieved... eastwood is a living legend, one of the most prolific actors and directors of our living times, Terminator Salvation was god awful and this guy didn't save the picture

Not a bad list. I said it before but i'll say it again, I think Sam Worthington would make a great SUPERMAN if they reboot the whole thing from scratch again.
He looks like the Jim Lee comics version, and as theyre promoting Worthington for a new big star, how much bigger than the man of steel can ya get?

I think I now know why Worthington was so good in Terminator: Salvation. He seems to have studied the action movie hero and mastered it. Had he not been in Avatar I wouldn't have seen it, but now I'll make it a day one viewing.

In ways, there is preference, and in other ways, there is a lack of it. I only see action films on here, most of them which I have heard it. At least the guy knows his stuff when it comes to solid, gold action.

To begin with Mad Max didn't come before Road Warrior. It's the other way around which makes you the dummy of the day. In order:
Road Warrior
Mad Max
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

No, you are the dummy of the day.
Mad Max was made in 1979, the Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1984. If you discount Summer City, Mad Max was Mel's first movie hence it came before the Road Warrior. Before you call someone a dummy please look up your facts.

Mel Gibson is an Aussie through his paternal grandmother and his family moved there when he was young. Mel Gibson is one of the finest actors/directors that has become a great role model for younger actors and Sam Worthington is proof of that. Sam Worthington saw what he wanted to become and used the tools available to him, which luckily were videos and DVDs, to learn from the best, which is what any intelligent person wanting to better themselves does to improve their career.
