Unimaginative and unfunny, this tale of barnyard mischief borders on 'udder' creepiness and adds little to this summer's repertoire of animated films.

Movie Info

A cow learns to walk like a man, both literally and figuratively, in this computer-animated comedy written and directed by Steve Oedekerk, the creator of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Ben (voice of Sam Elliott) is a cow who for years has been the leader and sober voice of reason among the animals at a farm where the critters are a bit unusual -- they can walk on two legs, talk, swim, and act like humans, though they have the good sense to avoid doing these things while humans are around. The laughs subside near the end as the requisite moral kicks in, but this is still that rare kids' movie I'd recommend to parents and nonparents alike.

Could qualify as a case study in just how quickly and thoroughly computer-animated studio releases have declined to a state of inspiration-depleted, assembly-line anthropomorphism.

A sweet and mildly funny movie that will entertain young audiences, but one aspect is utterly mystifying: The two main characters, father and son bovine creatures, have large, distracting udders.

A shockingly crass grab for holiday pocket money that's both infantile and endlessly patronising.

Criminal acts and scenes of brutal violence spoil the effect of "Barnyard" as an animated movie for tots.

That the lead character is a 'male cow' complete with udders shows how confused the picture is.

A beatifully animated simple but fun plot, carries enough giggles for all age groups.

The animation is perfectly colorful and the voice actors earn their paychecks, but it's blatantly obvious that this thing started production without a screenplay -- and hit the screens without a plot.

Relatively unfunny comedy about barnyard animals. It is notable mainly for its anatomically incorrect portrayal of bulls with udders.

This could be the film that snaps everyone's patience with Hollywood animations which have a Dell computer chip where their heart should be.

This was a fun idea and a very good movie. me and my daughter laughed the whole way through. Now of course the biggest problem with the movie is the fact that Otis a male COW. . yeah ..

Barnyard's biggest weakness is clearly it's animation that cannot compete the other of today's computerer generated animations. This is also uneven work that goes way too far to be suitable entertainment for children. All the redneck jokes which includes cows drinking, stealing cars and being "drunk" is not that funny to watch and will defintely make many parent to roll their eyes. After all this is supposed to be for children if i am not mistaken. Still director/writer Steve Oedekerk succeeds in creating moments that feel tender and are emotionally touching also. Especially the realtionship between Otis the Cow and his father Ben the cow, and his tragic death, brings welcome depth to otherwise hollow storyline. Mostly this is just one of those standard animations that offers anything new, but only with much weaker animation. I find it hard to recommend something this uneven and unoriginal.
