History is long, life is short. It's certainly too short for the sort of overblown, melodramatic, pseudo-epic filmmaking Quebec's Jean Beaudin tried to foist on Francophone audiences two years ago.
Feels like a French Romantic novel shot without a trace of irony.
Fans the flames of passion, undoused by time or clunky exposition.
The DVD box proclaims this "an epic tale of desire, courage, and destiny," but viewers are destined to be disappointed by this overly melodramatic film that falls short both as historical romance and as a period film.
While the love story is nothing special, Battle of the Brave is worth one look for people who enjoy the period.
you'll be dying for Celine Dion's inevitable closing number to take you away from it all. God, never thought I'd say that.

My Review: The critics panned this, but I'm a romantic, so I found this story to be a lovely, engaging one. I was swept away by the characters, the intrigue, the politics, and the relationships of this period piece. I loved the music and the ending was a total surprise. My husband (not a romantic) found it slow and distracting. He doesn't like plots with manipulation, and that's what this one was all about. He reviled the same characters I was embracing.
SYNOPSIS:
A historical drama, BATTLE OF THE BRAVE boasts an excellent cast in a film about war and romance. Centered on the feud between England and France over Canada, the plot involves an ill-fated love that develops between a fur-trapper (David La Haye) and a young widow (Noemie Godin-Vigneau), making for a tale that is tense, absorbing, and heartbreaking.
