A family's murderous battle over some bayfront property is the subject of director Mario Bava's bloody horror-thriller, which many have cited as the grandfather of the modern slasher film. A typically useless effort from Mario Bava...
If only one-hundredth of the films it influenced had one-hundredth of its perfection, the horror film would be a much less disreputable and more wonderful thing than has been the case.
Bava displays how ahead of the curve he was in tackling the slasher genre.
Bava ... uses the scenario the way a virtuoso musician uses a simple chord progression as an accompaniment for an inspired solo ...
Contains some of Bava's finest, and most naturalistic work as well as some innovative gore effects.
You'll see things that countless horror films have stolen, but unlike a lot of classic films that have been ripped off for years, this one holds up.
Not a great film on its own, but worth seeing to learn how influential Bava was on the 80s slasher flicks.
It just goes to show that the most influential movies are not necessarily the best; this one spawned Friday 13th and a whole host of slasher movies, and yet it's the weakest giallo of Bava's I've seen to date.
