His attention is increasingly drawn by Fouad, a café owner who excoriates his fellow Moroccans as lazy and lacking ambition. However, Driss manages to convince Fouad to join him in a business venture, due in part to his demonstrated industriousness. But his enthusiasm at being linked to this fascinating figure soon dissolves as he discovers a number of disturbing facts about Fouad's past. Based on a short story by Paul Bowles (THE SHELTERING SKY) with a script co-written by André Téchiné, BEACH CAFÉ (CAFÉ DE LA PLAGE) is a thriller that explores tensions between European and African cultures.
