This week's new releases include a few Hollywood takes on science fiction (Fox's remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still; the 1984 sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact on Blu-ray), and a few that fall into the fantasy genre (Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories; Jim Carrey in Yes Man, where he romances the 18-years younger Zooey Deschanel -- a middle-aged male fantasy if there ever was one). Awards-watchers have an Oscar-nominated film new to DVD (Doubt) and a new double-dip from a Coen brothers classic in the making (No Country for Old Men Collector's Edition). Read on for more!

The Day the Earth Stood Still -- 20%

When studios remake films, the question always arises: Why fix it if it ain't broken? (The original 1951 sci-fi classic sits pretty at a robust 94 percent on the Tomatometer.) The folks at Fox apparently don't like such questions, because they decided to "update" the tale of an alien visitor named Klaatu who brings a message of peace -- and then, potential destruction -- to the callow denizens of Earth. Keanu Reeves' monotone delivery as Klaatu didn't help TDTESS's clunky direction and script, though in his defense, he was doing it on purpose. Find the 3-Disc version for a plethora of bonus materials (production photos, storyboards, and concept art) and tons of thematic and making-of featurettes; unfortunately, the lone commentary track does not feature the film's stars or its director, Scott Derrickson. The good news? Limited editions of the 2-Disc and 3-Disc DVDs also come with the original The Day The Earth Stood Still, so you might get some enjoyment out of the release after all.

I will rent The Day the Earth Stood Still just because I own the original and want to see the new one. Mayyyybe rent Bedtime Stories if there is nothing else to do...

Doubt is on the to-see list. I saw Yes Man in theater. Not enough rubber-face for those who like Carrey's rubber-face and too much for those who hate it. Not a BAD movie, but not a classic.

Saw 'Timecrimes' this weekend. Kind of disappointing. Not bad, but ultimately pointless and, as with many time travel stories, leaves some questions.

"Tell No One" was really good until it ended, at which point, I felt it was a little silly. I hope it's not too much of a spoiler to say that "Tell No One" has a theme similar to "Transsiberian"'s.

I'll try to get Doubt, definitely watch it if you have not seen it. I'll rent Yes Man, because its Jim Carey. I though The Day The Earth Stood Still was kind of bad, I am having a hard time being a Reeves apologist after I watched that. I may rent Bedtime Stories somewhere down the line, but I'm not very interested in it. I don't want to give into The No Country for Old Men double dip, maybe when it gets cheap then I'll buy it.

The Day the Earth Stopped Caring should have worked if it wasn't for the lousy script. Reeves' stale acting actually worked as an emotionless alien much like it did in The Matrix. And it's not like remakes of 50's Cold War movies aren't successful (The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob). It just had a lousy story that I forgot five minutes after it ended because it didn't make me care anyone or anything one bit.

I was pretty disappointed with Yes Man. Carrey just looked out of place all the time. He's middle-aged trying to star in twenty-somethings movie. Weak and predictable story. Whatever makes Carrey funny is just rehashed from older and clearly better movies.

Love 2010. The story. How the characters play off each other. Kubrick fanatics can complain all they want, but it's 2001 for those who didn't get the first one.

"Doubt" was one of the few major Oscar nominees I saw. I really like it. I'm still not a fan of Amy Adams as an actress, but, everyone else was great.

As you know I give "2001: A Space Odyssey", an 8 out of 10, my main issue being I had no idea what happened at the end. But "2010" is bad because all it does is explain, and explain, and explain, and every once in a while, explain.

Don't you hate it when you get a DVD, and a not long after they release a better version. (Namely "Star Wars".) That's the story with "No Country for Old Men".

You know "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is smart. It realized nobody would want the new version so they give us the orginal.

"Yes Man" looks lame. And that's it for me. Say Goodnight Gracie.

I like Yes-Man, my only gripe was that it just felt a little short. So many more things involving YES could have happened. I will also read the book its based on as those adventures seem hillarious.

Day the earth stood still, was horrible! I loved the original and was hoping for big things here, but the movie was actually pretty entertaining, myterious and interesting, but then what seemed like half way through the movie it just ended in a hail of dust. WTF??? That point was where it was about to get interesting, and it was like someone just snatched and icecream from me before i finished it. Why do some big blockbuster films seem to lose it at the end of a film and say, hey, lets just have everything vaporise into nothing. Or a cloud of sand etc. Its in so many movies.

This is the reason why I always wait to buy movies on DVD. The only versions of the Star Wars original trilogy DVD's that I own are the re-release which feature the original versions and the special edition versions of the movies. So I'm glad I haven't bought No Country for Old Men yet. I have nearly everything from this week on my Netflix queue, while I've heard mixed things about Yes Man and Bedtime Stories, I like Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler and have to see them for myself. I want to check out 2010, but I actually still need to see 2001 (yes, I know, I'm behind the times).

I saw Yes Man in theaters. While it wasn't classic Carrey, it still felt better than seeing him tackle numbers (The Number 23). Now if only the studios will make Ace Ventura 3. Then I'll be happy.

Yes Man is hilarious and the best movie out there on DVD right now. Zooey Deschanel is a dream (her band in the movie is great) and Jim Carey makes a triumphant return to his comedy roots. The rest are poor remakes (DTESS), semi-good Adam Sandler (made for kids, but funny), and an overacted movie obviously written and starring people ignorant about the story's subject matter ("Doubt", I like all involved but the movie is overdone Academy Award season crap).
