I dont think it ends neatly at all, if anything the ending gives you a sense that the future of the story is much more complex than "the happy family" you see walking away from us onto the beach. We're led into the reality of it, this guy has definitively committed to having a kid on his hands; the little girl's at a critical juncture even if she doesn't realize it yet, having just met her bio mom; and we're certainly not clued into whether the woman will continue to play a role in the childs life. The ending works in that it doesn't need to be wrapped neatly with a bow because that's the nature of the future we dont know what happens next we figure it out along the way. What we're left with isn't much a lesson as it is simply a beautiful story of two people seizing the opportunity to alleviate one anothers burdens.
